Pokemon Go Developers Niantic Labs Announce Harry Potter AR Mobile Game 1

Niantic Labs has announced that a new Harry Potter mobile game is in development.

Niantic Labs revealed today that the studio will be teaming up with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment to develop a new mobile title based on J.K. Rowling’s fantasy series. Titled Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, the new game will use state-of-the-art AR technology that will allow players to discover mysterious artifacts and cast spells in their own neighbourhood.

“With this game, we are allowing the passionate, worldwide fan base to experience J.K. Rowling’s deeply powerful and imaginative universe in a new, truly immersive way. It is wonderful to have Niantic’s remarkable augmented reality expertise as we develop this incredibly rich wizarding world for players to explore in their everyday lives.” said David Haddad, President, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.

Niantic Labs is best known for their hand in developing the free-to-play augmented reality mobile game, Pokemon Go. Pokemon Go took the world by storm when it released last year, being downloaded over 500 million times worldwide.

“At Niantic, our goal is to leverage technology to create real world experiences that help people to discover the wonderful, and often magical parts of the world around them. The beloved Harry Potter stories have captured imaginations worldwide for more than 20 years and soon we’ll turn the fantasy into augmented reality, allowing fans and their friends to become wizards and witches.” said John Hanke, founder and CEO of Niantic.

No additional details have been revealed at this time but more information on Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will be made available in 2018.
