A day before The Game Awards officially kicks off, Paramount and Sega have released the first poster for the upcoming sequel to the 2020 Sonic the Hedgehog movie.
The poster for the sequel features a confident-looking Sonic as he rides a plane at a high altitude, which is being piloted by the titular character’s sidekick, Tails with Dr. Robotnik and his robots in the background going after the duo. The poster seems like a tease of what’s to come as the movie is set to premiere a trailer at The Game Awards on December 9th.
Tails will be voiced by the longtime voice of the character, Colleen O’Shaughnessey. Jim Carrey, who plays Dr. Robotnik, and Ben Schwartz, who voices Sonic will make a return in the live-action animation hybrid movie who are both set to make an appearance at The Game Awards this Thursday.
Geoff Keighley revealed on Twitter that the movie trailer is part of the Award show’s double header for the chilli dog-eating hedgehog. The tease from The Game Awards host heavily hints that the next Sonic game will be revealed at the show.
Back in late May of this year, Sega released a teaser trailer of the untitled game during the end of a 30th anniversary live stream which featured Sonic running through a forest. The teaser revealed a 2022 release for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch. While the game’s name hasn’t been officially revealed, it was believed that the game was originally titled Sonic Rangers based on metadata files used in the production of the teaser trailer.
More recently, Sega filed the trademark for Sonic Frontiers hinting the publisher is going in a different direction for the game’s name. As far as how the game will play, internet leaks have suggested that the game will feature open-world gameplay that’s inspired by The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. A new domain for the game was recently registered but doesn’t go anywhere at this moment, but that might change when the game is revealed this Thursday.
The Sonic Hedgehog 2 movie is set to release in theatres on April 8th, 2022.
