Paramount Pictures has green lit Sonic The Hedgehog 4 ahead of Sonic The Hedgehog 3 release, premiering in Spring 2027.
According to Variety, Paramount Pictures is preparing Sonic The Hedgehog 4, with a plan to premier the film in Spring 2027. The news was announced ahead of the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 premiere on Friday, which it’s expected to top the box office with $55 million to $60 million from 3,800 North American theatres. Sonic 3 is looking to be a holiday season hit for Paramount, and has received an 87% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes already.
The first two Sonic the Hedgehog movies have earned a combined global box office total of $725.2 million and drove over $180 million in global consumers from rentals and digital purchases. With how successful the movies were, Knuckles, a spinoff from the Sonic movies, was released on Paramount+ earlier this year, receiving a 75% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Jeff Fowler has directed all three of Sonic the Hedgehog films, with the latest instalment bringing back Jim Carrey as Dr. Ivo Robotnic, and Ben Schwarts voice acting as Sonic. Carrey also plays Ivo’s grandfather, named Gerald Robotnik. The rest of the cast included in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 are James Mardsen, Tika Sumpter, Idris Elba, Colleen O’Shaughnessy, and Keanu Reeves joining along as he plays Shadow the Hedgehog, a fan favourite character from the franchise.
While speaking to the VGC in October, SEGA transmedia boss Justin Scarpone shared his plans for Sega’s future as an entertainment company and plans to open an official SEGA store in Tokyo, Japan. “The Strategy is to turn us into an entertainment company with games as our core pillar business, just as Disney would say films are. We want to be in the position where it’s OK if there are people who love some of our IP who have never played a game, but have seen all our films, been to our live shows, been to our attractions, or bought our merchandise,” as Scarpone said.
With the plot details for Sonic the Hedgehog 4 being unknown, we should be able to learn more about the upcoming film as it gets closer to the Spring 2027 release date. In the meantime, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is premiering in movie theatres this Friday for many fans to enjoy.
