Spiral: From the Book of Saw Brings Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson Together in New Trailer 6

Saw has had a long and storied legacy, one that witnessed countless takes on the formula first introduced back in 2004. Now over 15 years later, Chris Rock has a new take for the franchise, one that he will both star in, and executive produce. And now, Lionsgate has finally unveiled the first trailer for Spiral: From the Book of Saw, and it both looks new, and family in the best possible ways.

Darren Lynn Bousman, director of Saw II, Saw III and Saw IV, marks his return to the franchise, with Spiral starring Chris Rock a police detective investigating a series of grisly crimes. Kicking off the trailer, we see Rock’s Detective Banks investigating a chilling murder, and it is quickly revealed that this killer is targeting cops. At every murder scene, there is an odd red spiral — reminiscent of Billy the puppets cheeks — giving the case an oddly sinister, and familiar call back to the Saw franchise.

Samuel L. Jackson is featured as Detective Banks’ father, along with a few traps and concepts that call back to the iconic series, but the tone and feel of the trailer is something very new for SAW series. Reminiscent of David Fincher’s Se7en, Spiral: From the Book of Saw is looking to take a new direction for the series, giving a slower, more methodical take on the brutal franchise. It is currently not known if Jigsaw himself (Tobin Bell) will be in the film in any major way, or how this film will tie into the rest of the series, but if the trailer is anything to go by, it will be an interesting experience either way.

Spiral: From the Book of Saw is slated it cinemas May 15, 2020.
