After the success of the animated film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is officially getting a video game from Outright Games set in the same universe as the film.
The newly announced TMNT title will serve as a direct sequel, taking place “months” after the events of the film. Notably, it hasn’t been confirmed if the events of the video game are canonical to the series just yet, but the events will follow the storyline, so fans may want to watch the film first to understand what’s happening.
The upcoming video game seeks to portray the artistic watercolour vision of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem film and cast it through the media of gaming. It’s also refreshing to see an original video game story sequel instead of a ‘reimagined’ retelling of the film’s story.
COO at Outright Games, Stephanie Malham, said “Nickelodeon is one of our longest-standing licensing collaborators and we’re overjoyed to have the opportunity to bring the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to life in a brand new and original video game. This is one of the most enduring and beloved franchises in the world, and we’re beyond excited to use our expertise to expand the Turtles’ global reach even further through the world of video games.”
The recent release of TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge garnered a favourable score from fans and showed the fandom’s undying interest in the series in video games. CGMagazine’s review stated the title was a love letter to 90s arcades and it “is an absolute joy in its presentation and could fuel many multiplayer game nights.” So the next adventure in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game library could seek to follow suit.
SVP of Games and Emerging Media at Paramount, Doug Rosen, said “It’s exciting to launch our first console game set in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem universe, especially as the franchise only continues to grow,” regarding the exciting announcement.
While a lot of information is still left on the table regarding the new title, mainly what kind of game it will even be, the announcement assures fans the title will arrive in 2024.
