Receiving worldwide acclaim when it was originally released back in 2025, 11 bit studios’ The Alters is back with a huge DLC focused on Jan Scientist.
Named The Alters: The Last Variable, this new DLC will focus on Jan Scientist and his alters staying behind after all the others leave to conduct research. This research in question is a life-defining opportunity, and because the research cannot be conducted alone, it becomes the focus of the entire DLC. Jan is joined by his specialised alters, a Biologist, Chemist, Physicist, and Geologist, all working in unison to unravel the mystery of the Oasis. Although the alters are seemingly united, each Jan has his own view of what the meaning of science really is.
The DLC will add a coterie of new features and refinements to the overall gameplay of The Alters. Starting with a brand new underground base for players to build and spanning all the way over to a refined gameplay loop focused on terraforming some parts of the planet into oasis-like biomes. The Alters: The Last Variable lets the player manage a group of highly accomplished scientists who are all the same person, but don’t always think like the same person.
When players inevitably explore the new regions added and terraform them, the effects will be apparent. While each transformation spawns new resources and shifts the land entirely, it also triggers the natural defence mechanisms of the planet at large. Earthquakes, severe radiation waves, and more threats like them will become much more frequent the more Jan and his alters work towards their ultimate goal.
Additionally, the DLC will also add new technology to work with, new components, modules and building in different soil types are all now available to use. There’s even a new Cryosleep Chamber, which players can use to see the long-term effects of their scientific advancements on the planet.
