Ubisoft Backtracks PS5 Compatibility Claims

Ubisoft has caused some confusion regarding the backward compatibility of its catalog on the PlayStation 5.

The company posted an article on its own Ubisoft Connect blog Friday, detailing a list of titles what would not work on the next-gen console when it launches next week. It later walked back this claim, removing the article and a similar forum post.

Per Ubisoft’s deleted post, nine games from their extensive library were deemed incompatible with the PS5:

  • Assassin’s Creed: Chronicles China
  • Assassin’s Creed: Chronicles India
  • Assassin’s Creed: Chronicles Russia
  • Assassin’s Creed: Chronicles Trilogy Pack
  • Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate
  • Risk
  • Space Junkies
  • Star Trek: Bridge Crew
  • Werewolves Within

Ubisoft told The Verge that they had pulled the article “as there may be inaccuracies.”

The news was unexpected, contradicting a list Sony released last month, of only ten PS4 games which would not be backward compatible. No Ubisoft titles were on Sony’s official list. These are now deemed “PS4 only games”:

  • Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma Volume One
  • DWVR
  • Hitman Go: Definitive Edition
  • Just Deal With It!
  • Joe’s Diner
  • Robinson: The Journey
  • Shadow Complex Remastered
  • Shadwen
  • TT Isle of Man – Ride on the Edge 2
  • We Sing

Had this been true, the list of incompatible titles for PS5 would still remain very light. Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate is perhaps the most noteworthy game on the list, and it holds one of the series’ lowest MetaCritic scores on PS4 at 76. Likewise, the Chronicles games rank in the mid-60s.

It’s unclear at this time why any of these titles may or may not have been incompatible, but Sony has also covered its tracks by disclaiming “some functionalities that were available on the PS4 console may not be available on PS5 consoles [and] some PS4 games may exhibit errors or unexpected behavior when played on PS5 consoles.” They advise testing older games on the new system before purchasing add-ons.
