Ubisoft’s Uplay opens doors for other publishers

Ubisoft's Uplay opens doors for other publishers - 2013-02-19 20:56:41

Ubisoft is finally unlocking its doors on the company’s Uplay service, that will now allow other publishers to sell games from competitors such as Electronic Arts and Warner Bros.

The cooperative deal will also see EA’s Origin distribution service now including the sale of Ubisoft games. As well as buying current games, users will also have the ability to pre-order titles like Crysis 3 and SimCity through Uplay. The purpose of the sudden change Ubisoft said, is to give Uplay’s users more access to find and play games and to give developers more ways to sell them.

“There are reasons people like these different services. The important thing we look at is we have two hats on – we have our Ubisoft corporate hat on, which is ‘how do we get our content in front of our customer wherever they happen to be?,’ and we have our service hat on, which is ‘How do we provide the most robust service for our customers?'” said Chris Early, vice president of digital publishing at Ubisoft, according to Gamasutra.

While Steam remains the most used distribution service for PC, it may eventually get some competition from Origin and Uplay. So far, Uplay has announced about 25 new games will go live, as well as a bunch of new from a number of developers. Though Uplay’s popularity may take time to grow, it’ll definitely take some time to catch-up to Steam, but may be a good alternative for those who are looking for a good deal.
