The Best Anime of All Time, Ranked:

36) Puella Magi Madoka Magica

The 33 Best Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Coming in at #36 is the genre-redefining 2011 dark magical girl anime Puella Magi Madoka Magica. When it first premiered, Madoka Magica took the anime community by storm with its grim portrayal of the magical girl genre. Instead of depicting frilly-dressed girls who use their powers to spread love and joy, the show explores the tragic implications of young girls making Faustian bargains for magical abilities.

While the cute art style and whimsical musical score seem innocuous at first, they serve to heighten the shock value when the story takes several dark turns. Few viewers come away unaffected after watching the idealistic main characters suffer physical and emotional torment in their fights against surreal, Eldritch horrors. Love it or hate it, Madoka Magica succeeds in subverting genre tropes to provoke visceral reactions from its audience.

Though divisive among critics and fans, Madoka Magica’s influence on the magical girl genre and anime as a whole is undeniable. Its shadow still looms large after nearly a decade, for better or worse. There’s no question that Madoka Magica is a standout, unforgettable viewing experience, even if it may miss the mark for some.

35) Hellsing Ultimate

The 33 Best Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Landing at number 35 is Hellsing Ultimate, a 10-episode OVA series adapted from the manga of the same name. While the animation and action sequences are fantastic—with fluid movements and over-the-top violence that horror fans will love—Hellsing Ultimate falls a bit flat when it comes to characters and story. The plot follows Alucard, an ancient vampire who works for a vampire-hunting organization in England, but he feels overpowered and two-dimensional. Also, minor characters like the police officer Seras Victoria lack depth. The pacing is uneven, jumping from slow build-ups to sudden action scenes, even though it is filled with some of the most brutally epic action scenes you will see in a show of this style.

Don’t get me wrong, this is one of my favourite series of all time, and it’s on this list for a reason, despite its flaws. Hellsing Ultimate delivers impressive, gory fight scenes involving vampires, ghouls, and regenerating demons. Fans of action and horror should check it out for the slick animation and brutal combat alone. It’s a wild ride that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Just don’t expect complex world-building or nuanced characters. Turn off your brain and enjoy this as a fun, visually impressive popcorn flick with vampires.

34) Hunter x Hunter

The 22 Best Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Landing at the second from last is Hunter x Hunter. While still a solid shonen anime, HxH fails to distinguish itself enough to rank higher. It delivers all the usual tropes, eccentric characters, tense battles, and superpowers but rarely exceeds expectations. The animation and artwork are strong, especially in fight sequences, but the story arcs sometimes drag.

Even though there is a lot to love with Hunter x Hunter, it also gets lost in dense narration and inconsequential fights between side characters. Moments like these slow the pacing to a crawl. Hunter x Hunter is ambitious with its intricate power systems and mature themes. However, Togashi too often drowns in the complex web he weaves. A bit more focus would lift Hunter x Hunter into the upper echelon of anime. As is, its tendency to get stuck in the weeds prevents this shonen from reaching its full potential. Still, for patient viewers, gems await those willing to sit through the slog.

33) Tokyo Ghoul

The 21 Best Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Ghoul-ing its way to the #33 spot on our list of the Best Anime of All Time is the macabre dark fantasy series Tokyo Ghoul! This show sinks its teeth into fans with its terrifying world where human-eating ghouls hide among society, just waiting to strike. Definitely not for the faint of heart!

We follow our boy Ken Kaneki, a shy bookworm who finds himself transformed into a half-ghoul hybrid after a freak accident. Forced to survive in the sinister underbelly of the ghoul city, Kaneki faces some crazy moral dilemmas as he struggles to hang on to his humanity.

Tokyo Ghoul has all the ingredients of a cult classic, landing it on our best anime list with slick animation, adrenaline-pumping action scenes, and complex characters you grow to love. The epic battles between Kaneki and his arch-nemesis ghoul investigators are edge-of-your-seat excitement, with plenty of blood and gore to go around.

But underneath all the horror elements lies an emotional story about identity and finding one’s place in a complicated world. Kaneki and other ghouls aren’t just mindless killing machines — they have hopes and dreams, too, which makes their violent clashes with human society all the more tragic.

After two gripping seasons filled with drama, thrills and complex themes on the human condition, it’s no wonder Tokyo Ghoul built up a devoted fanbase when it first aired and remains popular even now. Just be warned, you’ll never look at your neighbourhood coffee shop the same way again after this!

32) Devilman Crybaby

The 25 Best Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Landing at #32 is the visually stunning yet disturbing Devilman Crybaby. This Netflix original anime packs an emotional punch despite its brutality. Based on the 1970s manga, Devilman Crybaby modernizes the story of demon/human hybrid Akira Fudo. His physical and existential transformations elicit guttural reactions. Though hard to watch at times, director Masaaki Yuasa aptly captures the essence of the source material.

Devilman Crybaby is a tragic horror that uses sexuality and violence to expose the ugliness of human nature. Some scenes drag on too long while others bewilder new viewers. However, the gripping narrative and fluid animation ultimately portray the original anti-war themes. So, for fans of darker anime, Devilman Crybaby is a must-see. Just don’t watch it with your parents in the room.

31) Serial Experiments Lain

The 21 Best Anime Of All Time, Ranked

A personal favourite of mine, coming in at #31 on our list of the Best Anime of All Time, is the psychological thriller Serial Experiments Lain. This anime is a real mind-bender that explores some deep philosophical questions about reality, identity, and technology that are still relevant today as we get more and more plugged into the virtual world.

The story centers on a quiet high school girl named Lain who starts getting creepy emails from a dead classmate, leading her to discover the mysterious online world of “The Wired” (think of it as a futuristic version of the internet that pushes the bounds of reality). Things start getting trippy and blur the lines between real and virtual, feeling very much like a mash-up between The Matrix and Black Mirror.

Lain was created by director Ryutaro Nakamura and writer Chiaki J. Konaka, who take an unconventional and avant-garde approach to anime storytelling. There’s none of the usual tropes or action you’d expect. Instead, they craft this dark, atmospheric work that leaves you questioning the implications of advanced technology and virtual spaces.

The series won the Higashikawa Prize back in the day, recognizing its insightful exploration of existential themes. Even now, in 2024, as we get more immersed in virtual and augmented realities, Lain asks relevant questions about human nature and identity in digital spaces, which makes it a great candidate for out best anime list.

Serial Experiments Lain is a show that sticks with you and makes you think deeper about reality. If you’re looking for some mind-bending philosophical anime to sink your teeth into, Lain delivers an obscure but powerful viewing experience. Just don’t expect easy answers!

30) My Hero Academia

The 25 Best Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Landing at #30 is My Hero Academia, a fantastic shounen anime that breathes new life into the superhero genre. I was skeptical at first, wondering if this would be another cliché-ridden romp. But Bones delivers the goods with fluid animation, great comedy, and a heartfelt coming-of-age tale. Young Izuku Midoriya may not have a Quirk (superpower), but his courage and heroic spirit shine through after he gains the incredible strength of All Might.

With excellent character design and voice acting that brings its diverse cast of heroes-in-training to life, My Hero Academia immediately grabs your attention. It can drag at times, and it takes a while for Deku to master his full power. But for superhero action with emotion and great visuals, this first season is the start of something great. My Hero Academia is a fantastic superpowered romp, and if the story had not run out of steam before it reached the halfway point, it would have ranked much higher on this list. Still, as it stands, it is great fun and well worth diving into.

29) Baccano

The 22 Best Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Landing at #29 is Baccano!, a thrillingly chaotic anime set during Prohibition. With its interweaving storylines and an ensemble cast of heroes, villains, and morally ambiguous mobsters, Baccano! is like watching a violent game of Clue unfold. It may not be for the faint of heart, but I was on the edge of my seat as charismatic psychopath Ladd Russo and the various crime families crossed paths. With alchemy granting immortality to some characters, the body count racks up quickly.

Buckets of blood and gore fly as these immortals betray and backstab each other across the decades. Some say Baccano! It is too messy, but that’s precisely why I love it. It’s a ruckus of double-crosses, action, and surprises from start to finish. So buckle up for this bumpy, bloody thrill ride.

28) Bleach

The 32 Best Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Landing at #28 on our list is Bleach, the classic supernatural action anime about high schooler Ichigo Kurosaki, who becomes a Soul Reaper. Now, Bleach definitely deserves its spot for bringing slick style and fast-paced fights to the mainstream. Our orange-haired hero, Ichigo, is an instantly iconic character – even if he’s a bit too angsty for some tastes. And Rukia, the Soul Reaper, makes a great complement to Ichigo. That said, Bleach is held back by inconsistent power levels, repetitive plotlines that recycle the premise, and too many filler episodes.

By the Arrancar arc, it really starts feeling dragged out. So, while Bleach earns points for visual flair and coolness, the writing gets repetitive, and fights become style over substance—still an above-average shonen anime, but not top-tier. Give us more strategy and clever powers, less random power-ups!

27) Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure

The 22 Best Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Landing at #27 is JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, a series that revels in its own absurdity. At first glance, JoJo appears to be nothing more than a procession of ludicrously muscular men battling each other with supernatural powers. But those who stick with it will discover an emotional core beneath all the camp. While certainly silly, JoJo tackles themes like the passage of time and dying with unexpected profundity. And it effortlessly blends together comedy, over-the-top action, and earnest character drama for a uniquely entertaining mix.

JoJo knows exactly what it is—a weird, wild ride—and makes no apologies. That self-assuredness has allowed it to remain fresh over 8 separate story arcs spanning 30+ years. Love it or hate it, JoJo occupies a space all its own in the anime pantheon. Its bizarreness is a feature, not a bug.

26) Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion

The 22 Best Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Landing at #26 is Code Geass, a clever mecha anime with a complex antihero protagonist that really hooked viewers back in 2006. Though it leans into some melodramatic tropes, the character of exiled prince Lelouch leading a rebellion while pretending to be a normal high school student made for a fresh and exciting plot.

Between the action-packed mech battles and strategic mind games, as Lelouch tries to outmaneuver his enemies, Code Geass delivers an addictive thrill ride. It isn’t perfect by any means, but Lelouch’s brilliant plans and the show’s frantic pace as his lies threaten to unravel overwrite most flaws. Any anime fan looking for a bingeable series with wide appeal should add Code Geass to their queue. While future classics may surpass it, this Sunrise production was hugely influential in its era.

25) Trigun

The 22 Best Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Coming in at #25 on our list is Trigun, a classic sci-fi western from the late 90s. While the animation may seem a bit dated to modern viewers, Trigun was groundbreaking in its time for its unique blend of genres and thoughtful storytelling. The series follows Vash the Stampede, an eccentric gunman with a $$60 billion bounty on his head for alleged crimes he doesn’t remember committing.

Trigun’s subversion of the “hero with a mysterious past” trope makes it stand out. Underneath Vash’s happy-go-lucky demeanour is a deeper philosophical struggle around pacifism and the sanctity of human life. And that killer opening theme still slaps 20 years later! Though a product of its time, Trigun’s genre-bending premise and explorations of moral ambiguity make it a must-watch anime classic.

24) Naruto

The 22 Best Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Landing at #24 is Naruto, the long-running ninja saga that captured many imaginations in the early 2000s. Sure, it leans heavily on common shōnen tropes like a misfit hero and over-the-top fight scenes. But beyond the surface, Naruto tackles thoughtful themes like isolation and redemption with unexpected maturity. Our orange-clad hero starts off dead last in his ninja class yet keeps fighting to earn the village’s respect.

Alongside the emotional highs and lows, Naruto delivers some fantastically choreographed battles. However, the excessive flashbacks and filler can make marathon viewing an endurance run. For fans willing to look past some pacing problems, Naruto offers an epic coming-of-age tale packed with ninja action and a memorable cast of heroes and villains. It left an imprint on a generation of anime fans, cementing its place as a modern classic.

23) Made in Abyss

The 21 Best Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Landing at #23 on our list of the best anime ever is 2017’s hauntingly beautiful Made in Abyss. This dark fantasy adventure anime seems cute at first glance, but don’t let the enchanting art style fool you — what lies beneath is a merciless world that will make you weep for its endearing characters. As two kids descend into the deadly depths of the Abyss seeking lost treasure and loved ones, they face unspeakable horrors that contrast sharply with their innocence.

From brutal injuries to existential dread, the story pulls no punches. Yet glimmers of hope and wonder persist thanks to a masterful soundtrack, fluid animation, and moments of quiet peace between storms. Love it or hate it, Made in Abyss is one of the best anime that will drag you deep into its mysteries and refuse to let

22) Samurai Champloo

The 22 Best Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Landing at #22 is 2004’s Samurai Champloo, Shinichiro Watanabe’s stylish follow-up to his classic Cowboy Bebop. This hip-hop-infused Edo period piece may seem gimmicky at first, but it works. The anachronistic beats mesh nicely with the fluid action animation to create some truly memorable sword fights. Our odd trio—Mugen, Jin, and Fuu—bumble their way through Japan, leaving chaos in their wake. While the plot meanders, the journey with these characters is worth taking.

Sprinkled among the fun is a surprising amount of heart. So, even if you don’t normally go for samurai stories, give Samurai Champloo a watch. It’ll likely worm its way onto your favourites list, too, with its infectious style, over-the-top action, and plenty of laughs. This one is just plain fun.

21) Berserk

The 21 Best Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Bringing up the rear at #21 on our list of the Best Anime of All Time is the groundbreaking dark fantasy legend Berserk. Now, before all you Berserk superfans grab your giant swords to come after me, hear me out. Undoubtedly, this medieval horror series left a huge mark on anime with its grim portrayal of humanity and masterful storytelling. But a frustrating lack of follow-through prevents it from ranking higher.

We follow Guts, a lone warrior on a quest for vengeance, as he slays demons and copes with a traumatic past. The dynamic between him and the ambitious Griffith sucks you in right away. And the show’s unflinching look at violence, betrayal, and morality still feels groundbreaking.

Berserk lures you into its bleak world with phenomenal art, captivating drama between characters, and plenty of gory action. Who wasn’t shocked by the horrors of the dreaded Eclipse scene? It was some next-level stuff when it premiered in 1997!

The only problem? We never got a satisfying conclusion! The original 25-episode anime ends on a straight-up cliffhanger, with no follow-up season in over 25 years. All that build-up and no payoff! It’s like reading an incredible book and finding the last chapter ripped out.

So, while Berserk undisputedly deserves recognition for its influence, I can’t rank a series higher when it failed to finish what it started. We still don’t know how Guts’ quest ends! Anime fans deserve closure after investing so much. But Berserk sadly leaves us hanging.

20) Dragon Ball Z

The 21 Best Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Listen, I’ll be straight with you: Dragon Ball Z completely changed the game when it premiered back in the day. As one of the most iconic shonen anime ever made, it set the template for many action series that came after it. Whenever I see two characters yelling to power up and shooting colourful energy beams at each other, I think of DBZ.

At its core, the show works because of Goku. Sure, he punches hard enough to destroy planets, but he’s also got a heart of gold. The guy just loves fighting strong people and will go to any lengths to protect others, even if that means turning into a glowing blonde Super Saiyan. And man, watching him take on villains like Frieza and Cell as a kid was mind-blowing!

That said, DBZ isn’t flawless — the pacing gets downright sluggish during the major battles toward the end as everyone stands around reacting. And there are only so many episodes I can watch of two dudes grunting and charging up attacks before I zone out.

Still, flaws and all, Dragon Ball Z is an absolute must-watch anime classic loaded with crazy transformations, planet-busting brawls, and a charismatic hero who made us all wish we could shoot Kamehameha beams, too. Just be prepared for a lot of screaming and powering up! If you want to relive the magic, DBZ is available on most major streaming platforms now.

19) One Piece

The 21 Best Anime Of All Time, Ranked

When we’re talking iconic anime that stands the test of time, we can’t leave out One Piece. As one of the “Big 3” shonen juggernauts alongside Naruto and Bleach, this seafaring adventure made its mark on the anime world and is still going strong 1000+ episodes later!

The rubber-bodied ball of sunshine known as Monkey D. Luffy is at the heart of One Piece‘s appeal. His huge smile and even bigger dreams of becoming the Pirate King are downright infectious! And he’s gathered one of the most lovable pirate crews around him that feels more like family. Tag along with the Straw Hats to experience Luffy’s childlike sense of wonder and excitement himself as he explores the vast world and grows stronger.

But make no mistake, sailing the treacherous Grand Line is no picnic. Luffy and friends go up against some INSANELY powerful enemies thanks to the crazy supernatural abilities granted by Devil Fruits. I’m talking about controlling gravity, turning into sand, and shooting beams…there’s no limit to how wild these fights can get! Yet the crew always bands together when it matters most.

With its endearing characters, fantastical powers, and a story that keeps unfolding new mysteries and adventures over 20 yearsin, One Piece has cemented its place among the anime greats. Luffy’s enthusiasm is downright infectious, so I can’t blame anyone for getting sucked into his epic quest to be King of the Pirates! There’s a reason this show has captivated fans across generations — now come aboard and set sail with the Straw Hats!

18) Steins;Gate

The 21 Best Anime Of All Time, Ranked

When we’re talking about the best anime of all time, there is no question Steins;Gate deserves a on the list. As one of the highest-rated sci-fi anime out there, it’s a must-watch for any fan of the genre. At first glance, Steins;Gate seems like your average show about a self-proclaimed “mad scientist” who accidentally invents time travel with his friends. But that’s just the hook — once you take the ride with Okabe and crew, you get pulled deeper and deeper into the labyrinth.

See, messing with time has consequences. It turns out that trying to save his friend Mayuri from her predicted death pits Okabe against the powerful secret organization SERN. What follows is a thrill ride full of drama, action, and more twists than a pretzel factory! Moments like [SPOILER] had my heart racing and screaming at the screen. The writers weave this intricate narrative that keeps you guessing, with surprises coming from every direction. Just when you think you know what’s going on, BAM — a plot twist flips the script again!

But it’s not just about the unpredictable story; the endearing characters and humour make you connect on an emotional level as well. Okabe’s over-the-top “Hououin Kyouma” persona always gets a chuckle out of me. And sweet, innocent Mayuri tugs at the heartstrings. If you’re looking for sci-fi with brains, heart, and a metric ton of edge-of-your-seat excitement, accept no substitutes, Steins;Gate is a modern anime classic! Both seasons are must-watch material available on Crunchyroll and Funimation. El Psy Kongroo!

17) One-Punch Man

The 21 Best Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Coming in at #17 on our list of the Best Anime of All Time is none other than One-Punch Man. Now I know what you’re thinking — how can an anime where the main character defeats everyone in one punch be any good? Well, let me tell you, this show manages to breathe new hilarious life into the tired old superhero story.

Our caped bald hero, Saitama, makes defeating enemies look as easy as swatting flies, which allows One-Punch Man to poke some serious fun at all the overblown fights in shonen anime. But don’t think that means the action is lacking here — the animation kicks major butt as Saitama nonchalantly lays the smackdown on threats that have other heroes shaking in their spandex. We’re talking earth-shattering battles against planet-devouring villains that will leave your jaw on the floor!

Sure, the second season took a bit of a nosedive without Madhouse’s sweet animation to back it up. But the offbeat comedy and charm that makes One-Punch Man so beloved is still going strong. And we can’t forget the heart behind all the punching that comes from Saitama’s relationship with his eager disciple Genos. Their odd couple mentor-student dynamic injects some humanity into the outrageous world they inhabit.

So, if you’re looking for an anime that flips the script on all the typical hero tropes, delivers adrenaline-pumping animated fights, and packs some surprisingly feel-good moments, then One-Punch Man needs to be on your watch list! Its satirical superhero sensibilities might have a few small dents, but this bald wonder still packs an entertaining punch!

16) FLCL

The 21 Best Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Making its way to the #16 spot on our Best Anime list is the one and only FLCL! Now, I know the name sounds ridiculous, but trust me when I say this surreal sci-fi comedy has earned its status as a cult classic. Centred around a 12-year-old boy named Naota, FLCL shows what happens when his mundane life gets turned upside down by the arrival of the wild and vibrant Haruko.

With her sweet bass guitar in hand, Haruko brings absolute chaos into Naota’s world through her reckless behaviour and mysterious intentions. Robots and monsters start bursting out of portals in the poor kid’s head after Haruko smacks him with her guitar, leading to some truly bizarre happenings. The animation matches the absurdity perfectly with its avant-garde style, distorted visuals, rapid scene changes, and exaggerated motions. It’s like an animated acid trip — in the best possible way!

Underneath all the wacky hijinks lies a poignant coming-of-age story as Naota struggles through adolescence. And we can’t forget the pulse-pounding soundtrack courtesy of Japanese rockers The Pillows, which adds so much style and energy.

At only six episodes long, FLCL crams more absurdity, humour, frenetic action, and visual flair than animes ten times its length! Its surreal imagery and breakneck pace may be inscrutable at times, but it still manages to be wholly entertaining. FLCL solidifies its legacy as a one-of-a-kind anime that throws conventions out the window and revels in its unique madness brand!

15) Mushishi

The 21 Best Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Settling into the #15 position of Best Anime of All Time is the one-of-a-kind supernatural slice-of-life anime Mushishi. I know the slice-of-life tag might make some of you hesitate, but let me tell you — this ain’t your average relaxing watch. Set in feudal Japan, Mushishi follows Ginko, who travels the countryside studying these primal supernatural creatures called Mushi that cause all sorts of trouble for humans.

As the resident Mushi expert, Ginko helps out people who have the misfortune of attracting the Mushi, using his smarts to send the little buggers on their way. And when I say little, I mean little — the art style in this anime is crisp and naturalistic, really capturing the beauty of the natural world in rural Japan. It perfectly complements the gentle soundtrack to create this profoundly serene atmosphere.

The whole show has a comforting, melancholy vibe as Ginko works to bridge the gap between humans and Mushi. The stories themselves range from lighthearted tales to more sombre affairs as people deal with the calamity Mushi can cause. But Mushishi maintains a soothing, almost therapeutic feeling throughout, allowing viewers to appreciate the mystique and wonder of the natural world.

If you want an anime that transports you to a mystical, spiritual version of historical Japan through a masterful atmosphere and a unique supernatural concept, then a trip down the Mushi road is one worth taking! Mushishi certainly stands out for emphasizing the beauty in nature while telling impactful episodic stories you won’t soon forget, making it on our best anime list.

14) Monster

The 33 Best Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Coming in at #14 is the psychological thriller series Monster created by famed manga writer Naoki Urasawa. This anime follows Dr. Kenzo Tenma, a Japanese neurosurgeon living in Germany whose life gets turned upside down after he saves the life of a young boy named Johan Liebert instead of the town’s mayor. Ten years later, a string of murders makes Tenma realize he may have saved the life of a burgeoning serial killer. What follows is a dark, cerebral cat-and-mouse game as Tenma tries to stop Johan. With its gritty realism and moral complexity, Monster stands out from more fantastical anime.

At 74 episodes, it’s a slow burn but worth the time investment. Monster boasts fleshed-out characters and an intricate, unpredictable plot that will keep you guessing. Its dark themes and minimalist animation style may not be for everyone, but for fans of psychological anime, Monster is a must-see.

13) The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya

The 21 Best Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Coming in at #13 in our ranking of the Best Anime of All Time is the one and only The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. The series follows Haruhi, who’s basically the manic pixie dream girl of anime; she’s super eccentric, energetic, and obsessed with all things supernatural. She starts this club at school to try to find aliens, time travellers, espers; you name it. And the poor guy who gets dragged into her antics is Kyon, your average sarcastic high schooler who provides hilarious deadpan narration.

What makes The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya stand out is its crazy non-linear storytelling. The episodes are aired out of order, with time loops and alternate realities, so you have to piece together the plot. It’s like watching Memento or Inception in anime form. Totally wild and keeps you on your toes!

This innovative narrative style, plus its cool mix of sci-fi, comedy, and slice-of-life, created an instant cult classic when it first aired in 2006. Haruhi basically said, “screw genres,” and did its own unique thing.

The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya is a show that has something for everyone: endearing characters, supernatural elements, humour, and even some subtle philosophical themes. You’ll never experience another anime quite like The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya; it simply broke the mould. How could it not be on our Best Anime of All Time list?

12) Attack On Titan

The 21 Best Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Coming in hot at #12 on our list of the Best Anime of All Time is the action-packed thriller Attack on Titan. This show gripped fans from the first episode, ending with the iconic image of the Colossal Titan peering over the wall at our terrified protagonists.

Attack on Titan throws viewers into a dark fantasy world where the last of humanity hides behind massive walls, trying to avoid being eaten by giant “Titans” — creepy humanoid giants with a taste for human flesh. It’s a crazy concept, but the anime takes it completely seriously, using the man-eating monsters to explore some really heavy philosophical themes about human nature.

We follow Eren, Mikasa and Armin as they watch their city get destroyed and join the military to fight back against the Titans. It’s intense, violent, and at times utterly depressing. But you can’t look away! The anime keeps upping the stakes and hitting fans with insane plot twists that change everything you thought you knew.

Now, 10 years after it first aired, the final season of Attack on Titan just wrapped up the story in epic fashion this year, a great time to find its way onto our best anime list. Fans are still arguing over the controversial ending and what it says about the whole message of the show. Love it or hate it, Attack on Titan’s impact on anime culture is undeniable, and it deserves its reputation as a modern classic. Buckle up, though; this one hits hard!

11) Vinland Saga

The 21 Best Anime Of All Time, Ranked

The critically acclaimed Vinland Saga manages to storm in at #11 on our list of the Best Anime of All Time. This historical fiction epic throws viewers back to the Viking Age for a gritty revenge tale packed with complex characters and hard-hitting action.

Vinland Saga stands out from other anime with its fully realized Viking setting that immerses fans in ancient Northern European culture. You’ve got your raiding, pillaging, mead-guzzling seafarers battling it out in spectacular fight scenes animated by Studio MAPPA. It’s an awesome change of pace!

At the heart of the story is our angry, axe-wielding protagonist, Thorfinn, chasing down the band of Vikings who killed his father. He’s on a hardcore mission to murder their mercenary leader, Askeladd. Along the way, Thorfinn goes on a serious emotional journey that forces him to question his motives and bloodlust.

The character development in Vinland Saga is fantastic. Thorfinn evolves from this one-note revenge-obsessed kid to a more philosophical warrior over time. And Askeladd makes for an incredible foil — he’s cunning and ruthless, but not without his own code of honour. Their tense, multilayered relationship is a highlight.

With its historical setting, badass fight choreography, and themes of vengeance and redemption, Vinland Saga will sink its hooks into you just like a Viking longship! It is on our best anime list because it’s a must-watch anime that offers a grittier, more mature take on the action genre. Skål!

10) Kaguya-Sama: Love Is War

The 21 Best Anime Of All Time, Ranked

We’re getting into the top 10 Best Anime of All Time territory now with the rom-com smash hit Kaguya-Sama: Love is War grabbing the #10 spot. This anime injected the standard “will they, won’t they” romance formula with a shot of genius.

The premise sounds like a telenovela – Kaguya and Miyuki are the super elite student council president and vice president at their high school. They’re crazy about each other but both have too much pride to confess their feelings. So what do these brainiac lovebirds do? Start a secret mind game battle to try and trick the other person into confessing first!

What makes Kaguya-Sama: Love Is War so fantastic is all the over-the-top scheming and psychological warfare they drag their friends into. It’s like Death Note, with romantic tension instead of murder. And it’s hilarious! Whether it’s wild rap battles, faked confessions that backfire, or just awkward teen hormones – this anime will have you cackling at the ridiculousness of it all.

And underneath all the rom-com hijinks are these surprisingly nuanced characters that you really start to root for. Watching Kaguya and Miyuki’s relationship slowly develop from all the tension and mixed signals makes for a super satisfying payoff.

After 3 seasons, a movie, and hints of a season 4 on the way, Kaguya-Sama: Love Is War clearly struck a chord with audiences. It took a tired genre and injected new life with its fresh take on romance. We can’t wait to see what other conniving plans Kaguya and Miyuki cook up next to trip each other up! Will one of them finally confess their true feelings? The suspense is killing us!

Landing at #8 on our list is Mob Psycho 100, a quirky coming-of-age tale packed with psychic battles. Studio Bones delivers impressively animated fight scenes as Mob takes on evil spirits. Beyond the visual spectacle, Mob Psycho 100 explores thoughtful themes of adolescence, purpose, and self-improvement with humour and heart.

Mob’s character growth truly touched me as he navigates friendships and first crushes while keeping his dangerous powers in check. Revving its engine all the way to #6 on our Best Anime of All Time list is the much-talked-about dark fantasy Chainsaw Man! This highly anticipated anime adaptation took the anime world by storm when it was released.

Chainsaw Man centres on Denji, a down-on-his-luck teenager who merges with his pet demon Pochita to become the Chainsaw Devil, giving him brutal chainsaws for limbs to slice through evil spirits! Denji joins a special forces team to fight demons, navigating tricky partnerships and his own identity crisis.

The manga on which this game is based has received massive praise for its unique premise, kinetic action and subversive main character. Seeing Studio MAPPA bring mangaka Tatsuki Fujimoto’s gritty artwork to life has fans excited!

After a long wait, the anime has delivered in all the best ways, bringing together all the building blocks to make Chainsaw Man an all-timer: creative demon designs, fluid fight animation, a killer soundtrack, and plenty of blood and guts. 5) Death Note

The 21 Best Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Killing its way to the #5 spot on our list is the thrilling psychological anime Death Note! The anime follows Light, a genius high school student who finds a supernatural notebook with the power to kill anyone whose name is written inside. Light takes on the persona of “Kira,” using the book to eliminate criminals and try to create his own idea of a perfect world.

Hot on his trail is the mysterious detective L, leading to an epic cat-and-mouse game as Light tries to stay anonymous while L attempts to uncover his identity. Their intense back-and-forth mind games will have you screaming at the screen!

Part of what makes Death Note so accessible, especially for anime newbies, is that it’s a pretty compact story at just 37 episodes. With ever-increasing stakes, it wastes no time diving right into the psychological chess match between Light and L. You just can’t look away!

With its smart plot, great characters, and impact on anime culture, Death Note absolutely deserves its status as a modern classic thriller series. It proves brains can be just as gripping as brawn, and puts it on our best anime list! Just try not to have an existential crisis about morality by the end.

4) Violet Evergarden HERE

The 21 Best Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Coming in at #4 on our list of the Best Animes of All Time is the poignant drama Violet Evergarden. The show follows Violet, a former child soldier struggling with PTSD after losing her commanding officer in the war. Girl’s got to learn what emotions are and what love even means. Brutal, I know. She becomes an “Auto Memory Doll,” basically a ghostwriter of letters. Through this job, Violet goes on a journey to understanding herself and the human heart.

And let me tell you; it’s a rollercoaster. The feelings are real. Violet’s character arc of overcoming trauma and finding connection had me crying almost every episode. And I don’t cry easily! The animation by Kyoto Animation perfectly captures the emotional nuances with stunning artistry. They deservedly won Best Animation for this masterpiece at the 2019 Crunchyroll Awards.

Violet Evergarden resonated with me on such a deep level. If you’re looking for a complex, empathetic cast of characters and a story that will stay with you for a long time, this is it right here. Just have some tissues handy; you’re going to need ’em!

3) Neon Genesis Evangelion

The 22 Best Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Coming in at #3 on our list of the Best Anime of All Time is none other than the mind-blowing classic Neon Genesis Evangelion. Now, I know some of you might write this off as just another robot anime, but let me tell you — this one goes deep. Directed by avant-garde legend Hideaki Anno, Evangelion completely flipped the script on Mecha.

We follow the reluctant Shinji Ikari as he pilots Evangelion Unit-01 to beat back alien “Angels” attacking Earth. But—plot twist—the show explores the characters’ inner lives more than the monster battles. This is where Evangelion separates itself from the pack. The complex character writing, heavy themes, and Anno’s trippy directorial style come together to create a profoundly weird yet meaningful viewing experience.

And they kept building on it, following up the OG 26 episodes with three insane movies, diving even further into the twisted minds of the characters and lore. More than 25 years later, Evangelion remains an iconic staple of 90s anime for good reason.

So, if you’re looking for giant robot action with a side of existential crises, childhood trauma, and avant-garde filmmaking, then saddle up for Neon Genesis Evangelion. Just don’t blame me when you’re left questioning your whole worldview after. This is an anime that will stick with you long after it ends, making it one of our top contenders for Best Anime of All Time.

2) Jujutsu Kaisen

The 21 Best Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Coming in hot at #2 on our list of the best anime is the smash hit Jujutsu Kaisen. This dark anime series blew up when it premiered in 2020, fusing slick urban fantasy with traditional Japanese occultism.

We follow Yuji Itadori as he joins a secret exorcist society, fighting Cursed Spirits with some crazy sorcery combat. It sounds wild, I know, but the real draw is the characters. Yuji and his mentors have chemistry and depth for days. And I’d be remiss not to mention the jaw-droppingly beautiful animation from MAPPA; they pulled out all the stops on the fight choreography.

After a killer first season, Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 kept raising the bar with higher emotional stakes and some all-time great battle setpieces. The franchise made history by winning Anime of the Year at the Crunchyroll Awards for two years straight! So, if you’re looking for a modern anime that blends action, horror, comedy, and heart into one fantastical package, you’ve found it. Jujutsu Kaisen is essential viewing, bringing it in second on our best anime list.
