Valve’s GDC Announcements

Valve's GDC Announcements - 2015-03-04 12:13:27

Yesterday at San Francisco’s Game Developer Conference, Valve announced a bunch of new technologies.

The first on their list is Steam Link. According to the developer, this service allows gamers to stream games from any Steam Machine, or PC at 1080p and 60 Hz with little latency issues. It’s planned for a November launch for $49.99USD, or bundled with a controller for an extra $49.99USD. On top of that, Steam Machines from Alienware and Falcon Northwest launch in November at the same price point as other consoles. Those who want a little more can choose their gaming experience.

They also announced their vision for virtual reality. A room scale tracing device codenamed Lighthouse, and a VR input system. “Now that we have Lighthouse, we have an important piece of the puzzle for tackling VR input devices,” says Joe Ludwig of Valve in a press release. “The work on the Steam Controller gave us the base to build upon, so now we have touch and motion as integrated parts of the PC gaming experience.”

While those are huge announcements in their own right, the biggest came when they announced the successor to the Source engine. Source 2 will be free for developers and along with that, there is a Vulcan compatible version.

Valve really brought their A game to GDC this year, it looks like November will be a big month for the company.
