Brutalist Review Style (Version 2)

The Logitech MX Master Series has long been the gold standard for premium productivity mice. I’ve been a huge fan of the line for years; in fact, the original MX Master mouse was my daily driver from the point it was released until I moved over to a more gaming-centric option (the Razer Viper, for those curious). So when Logitech announced the MX Master 3S, the latest iteration in the series, I was eager to get my hands on it and see how it stacks up.

At first glance, the 3S looks almost identical to its predecessor, the MX Master 3. It has the same unique ergonomic shape, oversized scroll wheel, and side-mounted thumb rest. But under the hood, Logitech has made some significant upgrades. The two most noticeable changes are the new quiet click buttons and the higher-resolution 8000 DPI sensor.

Let’s start with the buttons. Logitech claims that they are quieter than the previous model while still maintaining tactility. After using the 3S for a few days, I can confirm that the click noise is drastically reduced. It makes a world of difference when you’re on a call or sharing a workspace. I can click away without disturbing anyone near me in the office next to me, something I could not say with the MX Master 3.

“The MX Master 3S offers incremental improvements over an already excellent mouse, solidifying its position as the new gold standard for premium productivity mice.”

That being said, the keys feel a bit more mushy than before. The tactile feedback from each click is less pronounced. It’s a subtle change, though the keys still feel responsive, just more muted. I’m willing to accept this trade-off of less noise for slightly more mushy clicks, but your mileage may vary depending on your personal preference. I will say if you are used to the mouse selection from Razer or SteelSeries, the MX Master 3S is positively silent, so that is worth considering if that is a feature you crave in your pointing device.

The higher 8000 DPI resolution was less noticeable to me in everyday use. I typically use my mouse in the 1000-1600 DPI range, so the increased maximum of 8000 DPI doesn’t provide much benefit. But having the extended range is nice if you need very fine control or use super-high resolution monitors.

Apart from these two headline upgrades, the MX Master 3S is otherwise identical to its predecessor in terms of design, size, weight, materials, and features. And that’s not a bad thing because the MX Master 3 was already such an excellent productivity mouse, and one I still look fondly on.

“The sculpted shape fits my medium-sized hands like a glove, making it one of the most comfortable mice I have used in a long time.”

The sculpted shape fits my medium-sized hands like a glove, and it is one of the most comfortable mice I have used in a long time. My fingers rest comfortably on the left and right click buttons while my thumb rests in the thumb groove on the side. The textured rubber grip makes it easy to lift and move the mouse precisely. At 141 grams, it has enough heft to feel sturdy and high-quality without being tiring to use for long periods of time.

I continue to love the dual scroll wheel design—the oversized ratchet wheel for vertical scrolling and the smaller wheel on the side for horizontal scrolling—and it is a fantastic feature to have on a mouse and one that proves incredibly useful for creative workflows. Having dedicated wheels for each axis makes navigating documents or a video editing panel faster and more efficient. The electromagnetic ratchet system on the main wheel lets you switch between smooth scrolling or defined steps.

Like previous models, the MX Master 3S connects via Bluetooth or the included Logi Bolt USB receiver. Pairing is a breeze, and I had no problems with dropouts or lag in my testing. The mouse can remember up to three device pairings, so you can easily switch connections between a desktop, laptop, tablet, etc.

And, of course, you get all of Logitech’s excellent software features like customizable buttons, gestures, app-specific profiles, and Flow for copying and pasting between devices. There’s almost no limit to the shortcuts and workflows you can set up.

Battery life remains excellent at up to 70 days on a full charge. I’ve been using the 3S for three weeks now and still have over 50% battery life left, which is in line with Logitech’s claims. And when it does run low, the quick charge provides 3 hours of use from a 1-minute charge.

So what’s the verdict after using the MX Master 3S for the past while? It offers incremental improvements over an already excellent mouse. The quieter buttons are great if you work in shared spaces or are on the phone a lot. And the increased DPI makes it a little more future-proof.

But otherwise, the 3S experience is very similar to the MX Master 3. That’s not bad, though, because the MX Master 3 was already such a phenomenal productivity or creative mouse. If you already have the MX Master 3, I don’t think the improvements justify an upgrade. But if you’re still using an older mouse or are new to the Master series, the 3S is absolutely worth the $99 price tag.

The shape, scroll wheels, software features, and overall quality remain top-notch and class-leading. Logitech has iterated on an already winning formula, improving on the Master’s few weaknesses while maintaining everything that made it great. The result is the new gold standard for premium productivity mice, solidifying the MX Master’s position as the king of workflow and efficiency.
