Brutalist Review Style (Version 2)

So, it’s time to let you all in on a little personal information. My wife has pretty bad allergies. In recent years, she’s become allergic to cats, and we have three. While the long-term solution is to let time reduce our overall cat count, I’ve been looking for ways to improve the quality of life in our home for her. I’ve bought air purifiers that made big promises to no avail, and I’ve tried DIY projects that worked fine, but not perfectly. Testing the Rabbit Air A3 Air Purifier, though, has made me popular with my wife, though not with the allergens in our home.

In the box for the Rabbit Air A3 Air Purifier, you’ll find the air purifying unit, a pre-filter, a medium filter, a BioGS HEPA filter, a charcoal-based carbon filter, a customized filter (depending on your order), a wall-mount kit, a detachable power cord and documentation. The selectable filters are based on specific personal needs and include a Germ Defence Filter, a Toxin Absorber Filter, a Pet Allergy Filter (the one I chose, for obvious reasons), and an Odour Remover Filter. The unit itself is rated to cover 1,070 square feet of your home.

The front panel on the Rabbit Air A3 Air Purifier is replaceable with one that doesn’t just match the rest of the unit—it turns the entire device into a piece of art. You can choose from a range of decorative panels, from Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night to Katsushika Hokusai’s The Great Wave, to Snoopy and Hello Kitty, with several impressive Rabbit Air original designs rounding out the options. You can order your unit with any of these panels included or purchase additional ones to swap out whenever the mood strikes.

“Since we started using the Rabbit Air A3 Air Purifier, my wife hasn’t had any allergic reactions in the front of the house.”

The Rabbit Air A3 Air Purifier’s wall-mount feature gives it a strong advantage over many other air purifiers, as you can be strategic about where it’s placed and how it looks in your space. You can mount it high on a wall and even upside down, allowing the purified air to blow downward, where that may be preferred. With the decorative front panels mentioned earlier, you can mount it like a piece of art, or simply keep it up and out of the way if you don’t have a suitable place for it on the floor.

The user interface features an LED display panel with touch-sensitive controls and indicators, including a filter indicator, wireless connection indicator, air quality indicator, power button, fan speed control, auto mode and sensitivity control (which allows the device’s sensors to activate the unit when needed), negative ion control and light control. All of these indicators and settings are also available through the Rabbit Air app for Android and iOS.

In the app, and on the panel, you can choose whether the lights stay on, stay off or switch to night light mode. You can also set the fan speed manually or allow it to adjust automatically. The negative ions, part of the A3’s six-stage filtration system, are activated separately through the panel or the app.

Speaking of that six-stage filtration system, let’s talk about it. As mentioned earlier, each part of the system is a separate filter with its own specific job. The washable pre-filter captures dust, pet hair and larger particles. The medium filter targets particles larger than one micron, including pollen and pet dander. The charcoal filter removes household odours, such as those from cooking, pets and tobacco smoke.

The BioGS HEPA filter captures particles as small as 0.01 microns with 99.99 per cent efficiency. These include particles that may carry viruses, mould, fungi and bacteria. It also provides an additional layer of protection for anything that may have slipped through the previous filters. The customized filters are designed to enhance performance in specific areas covered by the first four filters, targeting particular household concerns.

The negative ions are particularly interesting because they’re something the Rabbit Air A3 releases into the air. These electrically charged molecules are naturally found in high concentrations near mountains, waterfalls and beaches. They attach to airborne particles you’re trying to remove, making them heavier so they fall out of the air. Some claims suggest that negative ions can improve mood, but this remains debated, and I have no reliable way to measure the happiness caused by a device’s output.

“After trying a truly effective one, the difference in air quality is undeniable, and I’ll never go back.”

There are plenty of technical reasons why the Rabbit Air A3 Air Purifier should work—but does it? I used two methods to measure its effectiveness in my living room. First, I dusted before installing the A3, then left everything untouched for two weeks. The goal was to see how much dust would collect on surfaces. There was no reason to dust again, because they stayed spotless. When I checked the filters, the amount of debris they had captured was astonishing.

The second measure was the main reason I wanted to test the unit in the first place: allergies. Since we started using the Rabbit Air A3 Air Purifier, my wife hasn’t had any allergic reactions in the front of the house. The only area where she still reacts is our bedroom at the far end of the home, around two corners, when the cats are on the bed with us. The A3 has produced excellent results for both the cleanliness of our home and the comfort of everyone in it.

Another important factor is how quiet the Rabbit Air A3 Air Purifier runs. I’ve used many devices over the years—from air conditioners to tower fans to humidifiers—that promised whisper-quiet operation, but none ever delivered. The A3 sits less than two feet from where I’m writing this, running in auto mode. I’ve turned my head several times mid-sentence to check if it was still on, and it always is. Yet, I can’t hear it start up or run. Whisper quiet for the A3 is a lie—because I can at least hear a whisper.

Given the results and performance the Rabbit Air A3 Air Purifier delivered, its price tag of $749.95 US is lower than I would have expected. That price applies to the base black or white model. Versions with decorative front panels cost $20 more. There’s no added charge for any of the four customized filters; you simply choose one when you order. Replacement filter kits cost $115.95 US, but they only need to be replaced about once every 12 months, assuming the unit runs 24 hours a day, year-round.

Buying an air purifier had never been a priority for me. I always assumed they worked quietly in the background and made only a small difference. It’s not like an air conditioner, which makes an obvious change to the environment—or at least, that’s what I used to think. After trying a truly effective one, the difference in air quality is undeniable, and I’ll never go back.
