Brutalist Review Style (Version 2)

Keyboards are like anime; there’s a perfect match for everyone. As someone who is a massive fan of Christmas, getting the opportunity to review the Redragon TRUNDLE K688 Wired Mechanical Keyboard was truly a dream come true. I have used so many different keyboards in my life, from your generic grey and white keyboard from the 90’s to various forms of ergonomic keyboards for work. If you work in front of a screen all day, there’s a good chance you’ll need a comfortable keyboard to suit your needs. I was impressed with not only the Christmas aesthetic but also the functionality and the extra keys that this mechanical keyboard has to offer.

I work remotely, so I spend about 8 to 10 hours on my computer every weekday. For this reason, I’m always on the hunt for tech that is not only comfortable for the long hours, but also gives me a chance to show off some personality in my office. The Redragon TRUNDLE K688 Wired Mechanical Keyboard checks off all of my boxes for what I need in a mechanical keyboard. The unboxing experience was pleasant, not too much waste, and everything was packaged well. Which is always nice because sometimes these types of keyboards come with so much waste like unnecessary stuffing, tape and zip ties.

I love Christmas, it is my absolute favourite holiday, and it’s not even close. So this keyboard speaks to me on a spiritual level. The Christmas motif on this keyboard is simply stunning. The combination of beige and brown gives off a very gingerbread house aesthetic, and the plaid space bar and gingerbread man icons throughout the keyboard just make it feel so cozy. There was a lot of effort put into the little details of this keyboard, and I’m here for it.

This Redragon TRUNDLE K688 Wired Mechanical Keyboard also has these little scenes on some of the keys, like the gingerbread house with snowy trees, Santa and his reindeer, as well as an assortment of Christmas-related icons like more gingerbread people, Christmas trees and snowflakes. There are non-Christmas versions available, too.

“My absolute favourite part of the Redragon TRUNDLE K688 Wired Mechanical Keyboard is the addition of the 4 extra hot keys.”

I’m really picky about the type of mechanical keyboards that I use. I will always prefer red or brown switches, mainly because, ironically, I really hate the “clickity-clack” sounds that mechanical keyboards have. In saying this, not only does the Redragon TRUNDLE K688 Wired Mechanical Keyboard have red switches, but it also comes with built-in noise-dampening foam that also eliminates the obnoxious sounds. With the current version I reviewed, the switches are now hot-swappable and also linear to make switching out the keys much easier than before.

My absolute favourite part of the Redragon TRUNDLE K688 Wired Mechanical Keyboard is the addition of the 4 extra hot keys. The average keyboard has 104 keys; these would be the keyboards that have the number pad. This mechanical keyboard has 108 keys, with the additional 4 keys being preset hot keys to actions that I think are often used. These 4 keys are mute, calculator, lockscreen, and show desktop.

I’m not sure about the average consumer, but I, for one, use these keys on a regular basis, so having them readily available as hot keys was very clutch and eliminates the need to remember shortcuts on your keyboard. Things like the lockscreen hot key can be incredibly useful if you work in an office setting, while the mute hot key could be used if you’re working from home and your partner is yelling at you because you’re playing music too loud and cannot hear them over it.

The Redragon TRUNDLE K688 Wired Mechanical Keyboard is great, and I’ve really enjoyed my time with it. The only thing missing is the ability to control the volume and not just mute it. I listen to music a lot throughout my day, and I do think that was a missed opportunity. Other than that, the Redragon TRUNDLE K688 Wired Mechanical Keyboard is a perfect keyboard for anyone who not only loves Christmas, but for those who enjoy spongy, muted keys and priority hot keys to make multitasking that much easier.
