Brutalist Review Style (Version 2)

I never thought I’d be so excited by a Xiaomi gaming monitor, but the G Pro 27i impressed me, especially for the price. The Xiaomi G Pro 27i Monitor Review is a 27-inch monitor offering an impressive set of features, an incredibly competitive price, and even manages to look fantastic—a combination I didn’t expect. After spending several weeks putting this $369 monitor through its paces, I can confidently say Xiaomi has delivered a truly fantastic offering, especially for gamers on a budget who don’t want to compromise on performance.

While it comes in a relatively subdued box, once the Xiaomi G Pro 27i monitor is set up, it makes a fantastic impression. The modern white design of the stand and rear panel is a refreshing change from the standard black often found in gaming displays. The modern design looks even better thanks to the ring of RGB at the back of the display, adding a bit of colour to the sleek look.

It may seem like a minor detail, but I appreciated seeing the G Pro 27i set itself apart, offering a more modern addition to my desk. The stand is sturdy and provides a full range of ergonomic adjustments, including height, tilt, swivel, and pivot. This level of flexibility is often reserved for more expensive monitors, so it’s great to see Xiaomi include it here. And that’s all before even turning the monitor on.

While I love the look of the monitor, what really sets the Xiaomi G Pro 27i apart from other budget offerings is the display. The monitor boasts a 27-inch IPS panel with a resolution of 2560×1440, making it a great choice for mid-range gamers. It’s sharp enough to provide crisp visuals without being as demanding on your GPU as a 4K display.

What really stands out in a monitor at this price range is its Mini LED backlight, featuring an impressive 1,152 local dimming zones. This technology, seen in the TV space for a while now, allows for much more precise control over brightness and contrast, resulting in deeper blacks and brighter highlights than you’d typically find on an IPS panel.

I wasn’t sure how much this tech would offer when jumping into games, but I was impressed overall. In testing, the display looked fantastic, with vibrant visuals that never lost the atmosphere or detail that makes gaming experiences so immersive. Playing through the moody, atmospheric levels of Cyberpunk 2077, I was struck by how well the G Pro 27i handled dim scenes, as well as scenes with a blend of light and darkness. Shadows had real depth, and the monitor maintained detail in both the darkest and brightest areas of the screen simultaneously. While it’s not quite at OLED levels of contrast, it’s a significant step up from traditional LED-backlit IPS panels.

As I mentioned earlier, the G Pro 27i excels at rendering a range of scenes, delivering visuals that feel true to the developer’s intent. Its peak brightness of 1,000 nits in HDR mode ensures that bright, colourful games really pop off the screen. Firing up Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, the vibrant landscapes were rendered with stunning clarity and detail on the Xiaomi G Pro 27i Monitor.

I was particularly impressed by how the monitor managed mixed scenes, maintaining detail and clarity while ensuring blacks still looked good. While it’s not on par with OLED displays, the Mini LED technology managed visuals that really popped during testing. The monitor’s wide colour gamut (99% DCI-P3) ensures rich and accurate colours, making it a great choice for content creators as well as gamers.

One aspect I didn’t expect from a monitor under $400 was the level of performance, but the G Pro 27i delivered in this area as well. With a 180Hz refresh rate and 1ms response time, this monitor feels tailor-made for competitive play, where frame rates matter and can make the difference between winning and losing. Playing through a few rounds of Overwatch 2 and testing Dota 2, I was impressed by how smooth and responsive the gameplay felt. There was no noticeable ghosting or smearing, even in the most hectic firefights. I was also impressed that, even when I pushed settings to maximize the frame rate, everything looked sharp and crisp, never losing detail or feeling blurry during testing.

The Xiaomi G Pro 27i also supports both AMD FreeSync Premium and NVIDIA G-Sync Compatible variable refresh rate technologies, ensuring tear-free gaming regardless of your GPU choice. While the monitor isn’t officially G-Sync certified, I had no issues using G-Sync with my NVIDIA graphics card. I tested the monitor with both a flagship NVIDIA RTX 4080 Super and an AMD Radeon RX 7900XTX, and both worked flawlessly—so well done, Xiaomi.

It may sound strange, but when you look at as many monitors as I do, you come to respect a well-designed on-screen display (OSD), and the G Pro 27i is solid in that regard. The OSD is intuitive and easy to navigate, with a wealth of options for fine-tuning the image to your liking. There are several pre-calibrated picture modes to choose from, including specific modes for different game genres.

I found the “Standard” mode to be well-balanced for most content, but it’s nice to have the flexibility to switch to a more saturated “FPS” mode for competitive gaming or a more accurate “sRGB” mode for content creation. It also includes some fun extra features, like an FPS display to show your frame rate in real-time, though this feels more like something a store would use to showcase features rather than something the average gamer would use day-to-day.

In terms of connectivity, the G Pro 27i offers two HDMI 2.1 ports and two DisplayPort 1.4 connections, providing plenty of options for hooking up multiple devices. There’s also a 3.5mm audio jack for connecting headphones or speakers. The only real omission here is USB-C, which would have been nice for connecting modern laptops with a single cable.

It’s also worth noting that there are no built-in speakers and no KVM features on the monitor. While these aren’t major omissions, they would have been nice additions. Although most serious gamers will likely use headphones or dedicated speakers, I’m always a fan of seeing speakers on monitors—it’s one less thing to set up on your desk. The joystick control for the OSD, while functional, can be a bit fiddly at times. And while the Mini LED backlight is impressive, you can still see some blooming around bright objects on dark backgrounds if you look closely.

Even with minor issues, the Xiaomi G Pro 27i offers exceptional value for money and delivers a fantastic monitor experience. It competes with—and in many cases outperforms—monitors that cost hundreds of dollars more. While I love the visuals of an OLED display, that’s not always an option. For a budget-friendly monitor that delivers where it matters most, this is a fantastic choice. The Xiaomi G Pro 27i monitor delivers an impressive Mini LED experience and is a great option for anyone looking to upgrade or build a new 1440p rig and get the best bang for their buck.
