HBO’s highly acclaimed Western, Deadwood, will be returning as a movie, 12 years after the end of the original TV series. Those unfamiliar with the series, Deadwood told the story of a lawless mining town, set in the real-world Deadwood, South Dakota. The show ran for three seasons and in that time, impressively won eight Emmy’s while gaining a huge following behind it.

After the series end in 2006, many fans of Deadwood were left wanting a better conclusion, to an otherwise stellar series — Now in 2018, during this Summer’s Television Critics Association press tour, HBO’s head of programming, Casey Bloys announced that fan’s of Deadwood would see its return, this time on the big screen. Bloys also took the time to confirm that the movie will begin filming sometime this October, with a release scheduled for Spring of 2019.

Additionally, The Hollywood Reporter issued a statement that David Milch, the original writer of the hit TV show, has already written the script for the Deadwood movie, with Daniel Minahan, who directed several episodes of the show, would be returning as the film’s director. In other words, the Deadwood movie will be a true sequel to the television show that aired from 2004 to 2006.

When pressed further, Bloys stated, “Let’s take the green light and celebrate that,” refusing to let-out any further details regarding the film, aside from the fact that it will see release.

Plans for a Deadwood revival have been in on the table as far back as 2006 when the show ended, with HBO wanting to produce several television films that wrapped up the story, unfortunately, that never took off. in 2017, however, series veteran Ian Mcshane told TVline that Milch had delivered a lengthy, two-hour script to HBO, which has since then blossomed into plans for an actual movie.
