Owlcat Games has revealed some big changes coming to its ambitious sci-fi RPG, The Expanse: Osiris Reborn. After listening to feedback from a wealth of players who played the closed beta demo, the actor for the male protagonist has been recast, and the character has even been given a different face entirely.
The male protagonist is now played by Blythe Melin, while the female protagonist remains unchanged. Also currently unchanged are the voice actors for the main character’s twin. Owlcat has released a video comparing the old performance to the new one, which you can watch below.
The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is an original story within the larger The Expanse universe. The original nine-book series is written by James S.A. Corey and was adapted into a television series by Syfy and then later picked up by Amazon Prime. Taking place far in the future of the Milky Way, The Expanse puts a heavy focus on human storytelling and politics, chronicling what happens when humanity first encounters traces of alien life, and how various galactic forces seek to control it.
Another big update for the game happened alongside the new protagonist reveal, as Dragon Age: Origins lead writer, David Gaider, publicly revealed his involvement with Osiris Reborn.
“Alongside my work at Summerfall, I’ve also been collaborating with the Owlcat Games team on The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, focusing on certain aspects of the game’s narrative,” Gaider says in a post on Bluesky, “The Expanse has long been one of my favourite series, and so obviously I jumped at the opportunity to be involved.”
Gaider worked as a writer on many of BioWare’s games, including Baldur’s Gate 2, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age 2, and Dragon Age: Inquisition. He left BioWare in 2019 and co-founded Summerfall Studios, the indie developer behind Chorus: An Adventure Musical.
In light of BioWare being shut down by EA, Owlcat is one of the many studios that paid tribute to the legendary developer, and many of its developers have been vocal about being inspired by the likes of Mass Effect.
The Expanse: Osiris Reborn launches in 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
