Best Comics to Buy This Week: Family/President's Day

This week’s hot comics list falls on Family Day (or President’s Day, for our American readers), which is the perfect time to rest, relax, and look ahead to a great week in comics!

The Brave and the Bold: Batman and Wonder Woman #1 (of 6)

Hot Comics To Buy This Week: Family/President'S Day 5

Written By: Liam Sharp
Art By: Liam Sharp
Price: $3.99 USD

Liam Sharp and Greg Rucka’s Wonder Woman run is easily one of the best comics to come out of DC in the past few years and an overall joy. It served as Sharps’ big break and exposed his intricate and heavily detailed artwork to the masses. Now, Sharp has been tasked with writing and drawing a team up between Wonder Woman and Batman and that’s an exciting notion.

The story revolves around Wonder Woman investigating a murder and Batman responding to a number of strange occurrences in Gotham City that end up being tied together. Throw in the fact that the murder is that of a Celtic god and you have the makings of an interesting and beautifully drawn adventure through the heart of Celtic mythology.

Twisted Romance #3

Hot Comics To Buy This Week: Family/President'S Day 2

Written By: Alex De Campi, Margaret Trauth, Jess Bradley
Art By: Margaret Trauth, Carla Speed McNeil
Price: $3.99 USD

Twisted Romance is an anthology miniseries that has been released weekly since the start of February. The previous instalments have delved into strange concepts like AI love and vampire dating as well as underrepresented love stories, including a great one about asexual dating. Also, the one constant in this series has been the stellar writing by Alex De Campi, as she has created relatable stories that are at the same time full of whimsy and charm.

Romance comics are hard to find on mainstream comic stands which makes Twisted Romance all the more meaningful and needed. It shows that the genre is one that works well with the medium of comics and I for one would love to see more.

Quantum and Woody #3

Hot Comics To Buy This Week: Family/President'S Day 4

Written By: Daniel Kibblesmith
Art By: Francis Portela
Price: $3.99 USD

The goat has returned! Quantum and Woody#3 technically marks the 50th issue of Quantum and Woody since the series was resurrected back in 2013.  Since then, it has consistently been one of the funniest and strangest books on store shelves, and although it has been renumbered a few times, the core of what makes Quantum and Woody special has remained. This issue is written by former Colbert Report writer, Daniel Kibblesmith, with art by Faith artist, Francis Portela. It promises to be an engaging and hilarious ride.

For those who haven’t ready any Quantum and Woody, the series tells the story of two estranged brothers who get into an accident. As a result, in they gain extraordinary superpowers. This issue promises the return of their father, a genius scientist whose mind is stuck in the body of a goat. Think family melodrama with more hay eating, or whatever it is that goats like to snack on.

Cave Carson Swamp Thing Special #1

Hot Comics To Buy This Week: Family/President'S Day 1

Written By: Jon Rivera
Art By: Langdon Foss
Price: $4.99 USD

Forget Dark Knights: Metal or Doomsday Clock, the best recent event series from DC Comics is Milk Wars, and it continues in Cave Carson/ Swamp Thing Special #1. The event is a crossover between former My Chemical Romance singer, Gerard Way’s comics imprint, Young Animal, and the rest of the DC Universe. Milk Wars involves DC’s greatest heroes being corrupted by mind-controlling milk and tasks the Young Animal heroes to bring them back to their former selves. This concept manages to serve as a celebration of what makes DC’s icons like Wonder Woman and Batman so iconic as it deconstructs them down to their core while having fun doing so.

Milk Wars has been full of laughs and stellar comedy, and there’s no reason to think that this instalment should be any different. The event is also very accessible as each issue so far has served as a one-off story exploring a certain character. Check it out and remember: Milk is evil.

Bloodborne #1

Hot Comics To Buy This Week: Family/President'S Day 3

Written By: Ales Kot
Art By: Piotr Kowalski
Price: $3.99 USD

Comics based on video games are generally mediocre and underwhelming cash grabs, that coast on the reader’s affinity for the source material in question. While Bloodbourne #1 could very well be yet another example of this, the promising creative team is too exciting to pass up on. Ales Kot has been a rising star these last few years and Piotr Kowalski’s art fits perfectly with the Lovecraftian setting of this series.

Bloodborne tells the story of an ancient city plagued by a sinister epidemic, in which a nameless hunter must embark on a dangerous quest full of demons and death. It’s a wonderfully infuriating game and its challenging fights and hideous demons should translate wonderfully to comic pages.
