2K Games flew us to Los Angeles for NBA 2K27 Community Day, where the team unveiled the new game. We also got to play a build and see firsthand some of the latest updates to the 2K franchise. From what we played, NBA 2K27 looks set to be the most robust game in the series, while remaining accessible to casual players and pros alike.
The NBA 2K27 Community Day took place at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, home of the Los Angeles Clippers. The audience included international press from countries ranging from Canada to Australia (the furthest place from anywhere), along with influencers, streamers and special guests of 2K. The presentation was delivered simultaneously to the live audience and to viewers watching the livestream online.

The announcements about the latest updates coming to NBA 2K27 got me really excited. The gameplay mechanics have been improved with a dynamic layup engine, new offensive moves such as step-throughs and up-and-unders, new shot-contesting and defensive moves, and a brand-new collision system designed to make movement in the game feel more realistic.

MyPLAYER has been given more versatility in NBA 2K27, giving you the ability to create female players, a redesigned badge system featuring 53 skill badges that can be used in a loadout when playing against your friends and a synergy system that lets you boost those badges beyond their max potential to give you the biggest possible boosts. The game’s new builder path has pre-made templates based on existing NBA/WNBA players for a simpler creation process, or you can dig deep and customize your skillsets as you see fit.
MyTEAM now allows you to trade in any of your cards for rewards without limits. Every card can be levelled up with Player XP that boosts the existing badge systems and attributes. Game modes like the returning Triple Threat Online and Clutch Time will rotate throughout the year for fresh MyTEAM gameplay. The Gauntlet mode is now unlimited as long as you have cards to play, and you will be rewarded for logging on with daily login rewards, running on a three-tiered structure, and additional rewards when you maintain login streaks.

NBA 2K27’s MyCAREER mode has seen some huge upgrades as well with MyCAREER Eras, where you can put your player alongside Steph Curry, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, or Larry Bird. The presentation gives you a retro feel with old tube-TV aesthetics and excellent designs for some of your favourite players from the past.
MyCAREER Mode, “Fire & Concrete,” is a cinematic story combined with gameplay where you follow the full story of your MyPLAYER, complete with cutscenes and featuring the voice talent of rapper/actor Vince Staples. NBA 2K27 takes MyCAREER even further by allowing a co-op MyCAREER, letting you and a friend experience the mode together. Is your friend not available? No problem! You can continue to play through the career, and your friend will still earn rewards even when they are AFK.
The City has also gone through a renovation in NBA 2K27. For the first time ever, the City is co-ed, allowing your male and female MyPLAYERs to play. Play at the rotating venues of the REC, play on a city block in The Theatre, and enjoy seasonal parks, as well as remasters of parks last seen in NBA 2K17. Crew HQ lets you create a home base for your squad.

Want to play NBA 2K27 online but do not want to get squashed like me? Casual Corner lets you play 3-on-3 or 5-on-5 matches using skill-based matchmaking and a progression path from PvE to PvP, helping you face opponents closer to your level. You can also take things up a notch with Street Kings Tournaments and may encounter Court Crashers, in-game bosses that can appear at random for you to challenge.

NBA 2K27 also moves some features from the TV to your phone through the NBA 2K HQ app. The app includes a full MyPLAYER builder, social tools for managing and communicating with your squad and a way to track progress and rewards without launching the game. You can also check daily leaderboards to see whether you are still on top or need to step things up. The app and early access to the MyPLAYER builder will be available ahead of the game on Aug. 21.
We had a chance to play certain modes and explore the MyPLAYER builder both in-game and through the app. Even in this early build, gameplay felt incredibly smooth, and the range of modes should give different types of players plenty to explore. It is also interesting to see how different streamers gravitate toward particular modes, whether that means online play or a MyCAREER playthrough. The new features should create plenty of opportunities for both playing and watching others.

The Standard Edition of NBA 2K comes with 10,000 VC for those who pre-order; Deluxe Edition owners get 100,000 VC and exclusive MyTEAM and MyCAREER content, and the Ultra Edition gives you 135,000 VC, the Season 1 Pro Pass + Summer Pass and Ultra Edition Team Player cards.
The game launches on PlayStation 5, XBOX Series X|S, PC (Steam) and Nintendo Switch 2 on September 4, with early access for Deluxe and Ultra Edition owners on August 26, going live at noon EST. Thanks to NBA 2K for inviting us to the NBA 2K27 Community Day and allowing us to experience the game ahead of launch. For fans of the franchise, the game promises plenty of fantastic new and updated modes, with big improvements to gameplay and mechanics for a more immersive experience than ever. However you choose to take the court, this game will have you covered.
