Ubisoft is updating three classic Far Cry titles later this week, enabling them to run at 60 frames per second on modern consoles.
After years of waiting, players will soon be able to revisit their favourite entries in the series with improved performance. The official Far Cry X account teased the update using a series of emojis, which fans quickly decoded as confirmation that the patch will arrive on Jan. 21. The update applies specifically to Far Cry 3, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon and Far Cry Primal.
The X message spelled out these sentences, as spotted by VGC:
- Far Cry + Tree + 6 Tea + Frame Pair Second
- || + Blood Dragon + 6 Tee + Frame Pear Second
- || + Gorilla + 6 Tea + Frame Purr Seconds
One follower asked the account for clarification, and it responded with a GIF reading, “That is correct.” Another user followed up by asking when the updates would arrive, to which the account replied, “In a few days. January 21.” The account has since posted a video confirming the update is real.
The video showed footage of Far Cry 3 running at 60 fps on current-generation consoles, along with confirmation of the update’s release date. The upgrade has been welcomed by fans, many of whom have been calling for improved performance in the series’ older entries. Last April, Far Cry 4 also received an update that enabled 60 frames per second support on PlayStation 5, despite having been released more than a decade earlier. The game was already capable of running at 60 frames per second on Xbox Series X through Microsoft’s FPS Boost feature, which applies to select Ubisoft titles.
From a gaming perspective, Ubisoft still has a lot of development for the franchise, especially since they launched the new Tencent-backed subsidiary Vantage Studios. This new studio will oversee Ubisoft’s biggest game series, including Assassin’s Creed, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six, and Far Cry. They also plan to expand their reach with the recently announced Far Cry television series at FX.

So far, the plan is for the show to be an anthology series, with different seasons set in different locations and featuring different casts of characters. Other information about the series includes that Rob Mac will produce the show and may also star in it. Noah Hawley and their production studios would also join the project.
