Amazon's Mass Effect Series Taps Doug Jung As Showrunner

The Amazon Prime Video TV series Mass Effect announced that Doug Jung, co-writer of Star Trek Beyond, is tapped as a showrunner.

The Mass Effect TV series is finally gaining more traction. The Amazon Prime Video TV series Mass Effect has announced that Doug Jung, co-writer of Star Trek Beyond, has joined the project as a showrunner. As reported by Deadline, Jung will executive produce the upcoming show with writer Dan Casey. They will be working alongside Michael Gamble from EA, Karim Zreik of Cedar Tree Productions on Amazon’s end, as well as Ari Arad (Uncharted, Borderlands) and Emmy Yu of Arad Productions.

The latest update on the Mass Effect series was when Casey noted that he had been writing the show for “almost a year,” as the publication detailed. Officially, the series was announced in November last year—where Casey’s involvement was first spotted. Casey is most known for writing the ninth Fast & Furious installment, F9: The Fast Saga. As for Jung, he most recently worked on writing a couple of episodes of Netflix’s Mindhunter, and the streamer’s film The Cloverfield Paradox. He also wrote the upcoming Apple TV+ series Chief of War, led by Jason Momoa.

While there are no casting details out yet, the fem Shep voice actress Jennifer Hale spoke about how she would love to be a part of the Mass Effect series. Hale also told Eurogamer how the original cast should be involved in the show as well. Even Henry Cavill expressed interest in being a part of the series, but was tapped for Amazon’s other projects related to Warhammer.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition Arrives May 14

Live-action video game adaptations have been hit or miss of late—but recently more hitting. Until Dawn and A Minecraft Movie made a great showing at the box office, with Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 waiting on the wings. Amazon’s Fallout series has been their latest video game adaptation success, so a Mass Effect series has a chance to be great based on Amazon’s track record. The animated anthology series Secret Level was also a huge hit from the streamer, providing an anthology series for multiple games.

In terms of the next Mass Effect video game release, Mass Effect 5 has been announced. However, there is no release date/window yet, and it will be in development for a couple more years.
