Angry Birds Developer Rovio Hit With Layoffs 1

The once golden boy of the mobile games scene, Rovio is looking to lay off 213 people.

In a move to restructure the company to ensure it is better equipped to deal with its core businesses of gaming, media and consumer products. This comes after negotiations with its employees that where announced on August 26th.

This is not surprising news, for the company that saw fantastic sales of its core products Angry Birds, along with Angry Birds 2 but has faced increased competition. The mobile market is more saturated than ever, and it can be difficult even for established brands like Rovio.

This is made clear with the announcement made on August 26th, 2015 where Rovio CEO Pekka Rantala said “fundamental changes are needed to ensure Rovio succeeds in its global ambitions to be the leading entertainment company with mobile games at its heart”

Much of these issues come from the fact they overextended too early, with Pekka Rantala going on to say “we did too many things. In our current financial condition we must now put focus on where we are at our best: in creating magnificent gaming experiences, in producing an amazing animation movie and in delighting our fans with great products.”
