The Strong Museum has announced the 12 games up for induction in its 2018 World Video Game Hall of Fame.
The 12 finalists, which range from RPGs like Final Fantasy VII to rhythm games like Dance Dance Revolution, include the following games:
• Asteroids
• Call of Duty
• Dance Dance Revolution
• Final Fantasy VII
• Half-Life
• John Madden Football
• King’s Quest
• Minecraft
• Ms. Pac-Man
• Spacewar!
• Tomb Raider
The winners will be decided by the members of the International Selection Advisory Committee, “a supporting group composed of journalists, scholars, and other individuals familiar with the history of video games and their role in society.” However, the public is able to vote on which games they believe should also be inducted from March 27 to April 4, the winner of which will be inducted as part of a “Player’s Choice” ballot. The inductees will be officially announced at a ceremony at The Strong on May 3.
Whichever games end up inducted will join the likes of Super Mario Bros., Halo: Combat Evolved, Tetris, and Street Fighter II as games recognized in the World Video Game Hall of Fame.
Based in Rochester, New York, The Strong began inducting games into the World Video Game Hall of Fame in 2015 with Tetris, World of Warcraft, Super Mario Bros., Doom, Pac-Man, and Pong. 2016 followed with Space Invaders, Sonic the Hedgehog, Grand Theft Auto III, The Legend of Zelda, The Oregon Trail, and The Sims. Last year’s inductees included Donkey Kong, Halo: Combat Evolved, Pokemon Red & Green, and Street Fighter II. Each game that has been added to the Hall of Fame is on permanent display at the museum’s eGameRevolution exhibit.
