Crunchyroll adds Onmyo Kaiten Re:Birth Verse, a new original isekai battle-action anime from the Fire Force studio, to its summer slate
The acclaimed animation studio david production is cooking up an original recipe for this summer. Known for its work on Fire Force and JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, the studio is set to debut its first original animated series: Onmyo Kaiten Re:Birth Verse. The new anime will stream on Crunchyroll starting July 2, available worldwide (excluding Asia), with new episodes airing weekly in Japan. With the release date fast approaching, a new trailer dropped this week.
Here is the official synopsis for Onmyo Kaiten Re:Birth Verse, as provided on Crunchyroll: “Takeru Narihira is a delinquent who often thinks about Tsukimiya, the girl who appears in his dreams. After an unexpected accident, Takeru finds himself in a parallel universe of the world that Tsukimiya lives in. When Takeru and Tsukimiya are slain by a monster, he awakens again and realizes he has leapt through time. Now, Takeru must train with Abe Seimei to fight for Tsukimiya’s life!”
Based on the trailer, Onmyo Kaiten Re:Birth Verse is a crossbreed of numerous anime. The main character Takeru’s design appears to be a mix of Yuji Itadori from Jujutsu Kaisen meets Takemichi Hanagaki from Tokyo Revengers. Also, we love to see some BIPOC characters in anime. David production typically makes cool BIPOC characters, so maybe the woman in this series will be awesome. She really looks like Shihōin Yoruichi from Bleach. The general vibes of the story beats seem like Disney+’s Tokyo Revengers story, with a touch of Crunchyroll’s Tower of God for the fighting structure.
The blend of isekai tropes and time travel is an intriguing crossover. Typically, isekai anime stick to one historical setting and remain consistent throughout the series, but this is a level further. This is seen in popular titles such as The Eminence In Shadow, Re:Zero -Starting Life in Another World-, and Uncle From Another World. But Onmyo Kaiten Re:Birth Verse almost feels like it is going to be on the level of different historical worlds but with the same characters, somewhat conceptually like Cloud Atlus.
Hideya Takahashi (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Golden Wind; 2022’s Urusei Yatsura) directed Onmyo Kaiten Re:Birth Verse, who also created the original concept. Fujiko Sakuno penned this original story, alongside Akuto Sato. Hayashi Mori wrote the series composition, who previously authored the screenplay for the animated Netflix feature film Drifting Home and the series composition for Cells at Work! Code Black and Sand Land: The Series.
Additional staff credits include character designer Kazuaki Morita (Classroom of the Elite; Assassination Classroom); Katsuie Shibata is listed under the world and setting research team; and Masahiro Tokuda (You are Ms. Servant; ONE PIECE FAN LETTER) conducted all the music for Onmyo Kaiten Re:Birth Verse. Based on the trailer, the use of taiko drums and shamisen sounds amazing for the trailer music. If the series music sounds just as upbeat and lively as this trailer, this could be fun action anime.

Crunchyroll also unveiled the Japanese voice cast for Onmyo Kaiten Re:Birth Verse’s upcoming release:
