Time To Journey To Another World

The Best Isekai Anime of All Time, Ranked

You’ve surely noticed the recent explosion of isekai anime gracing our screens. Isekai translates to another world, and that is what you get when you dive into an anime in this genre. These are anime that take their ordinary characters to fantastical realms filled with magic, monsters, and adventures galore.

Even though it is a genre I really enjoy, I’ll be honest with you: it’s an incredibly hit-or-miss genre. For every standout like Re:Zero or Konosuba, you get a dozen generic entries trying to cash in on the craze. Light novel adaptations tend to lean on repetitive tropes or overpowered protagonists.

But that doesn’t mean there aren’t some true gems awaiting discovery by intrepid anime fans willing to dig deeper! The isekai genre has plenty to offer beyond the fluffy power fantasies and fanservice fests, with innovative spins on the classic portal premise.

So, I’ve taken up the noble quest of separating the wheat from the chaff to bring you this definitive ranking of the 31 Best Isekai Anime of All Time. Through countless hours of watching two-bit adventurers blunder through fantasy worlds, I’ve uncovered the cream of the crop that brings actual depth, comedy, or unexpected twists to this overloaded genre.

Whether you’re a seasoned isekai veteran or newcomer looking to dive in, I’ve got you covered. We’ve got hard-hitting dramas, witty satires, chilling horrors, and wholesome comfort food on the menu. So portal on into my personal picks for the definitive isekai watchlist. Adventure awaits!

31) Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody

The Best Isekai Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Cheatings its way into #27 in our rankings of the best Isekai of all time is Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody. This show had an intriguing concept: a programmer gets transported into a fantasy RPG world where his cheating abilities make him overpowered from the start. Unfortunately, the execution left much to be desired once past the initial fun of the first few episodes.

The main character, Satou, is bland and lacks compelling development throughout the series. His interactions with the growing harem of female companions, many of whom have cliche traits, feel shallow and fail to explore their backstories meaningfully. The pacing meanders between slice-of-life segments and action scenes, never quite finding the right balance or narrative drive.

While some world-building elements held potential, Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody‘s mediocre animation and reliance on RPG tropes over unique storytelling held it back. Filler episodes and uneven pacing prevented the plot and characters from gaining much depth or momentum. Having said that, it has enough early on to make it worth checking out, just be prepared to be underwhelmed.

30) Wise Man’s Grandchild

The Best Isekai Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Coming in at a less-than-magical 29th place on our ranking of the best Isekai is Wise Man’s Grandchild. This 2019 fantasy anime follows Shin Wolford, a regular salaryman reborn into a magical world and adopted by the legendary wizard Merlin. Shin soon discovers his innate talent for magic and combat, quickly gaining overpowered abilities that allow him to breeze through challenges.

Sadly, Wise Man’s Grandchild suffers from bland writing and a lack of originality. The plot and characters fail to captivate, instead falling into predictable isekai tropes. While the vibrant magic battles made me want to dive in, they cannot sustain interest in the face of the show’s fatal weakness — an utter lack of tension or meaningful conflict for its overpowered protagonist. Ultimately, Wise Man’s Grandchild brings nothing fresh to the saturated isekai genre. Its shallow wish-fulfillment narrative offers only fleeting entertainment for fans willing to overlook the generic storytelling.

29) Sonny Boy

The Best Isekai Anime Of All Time, Ranked

At #30 on our list of best Isekai anime, Sonny Boy is a psychological Isekai anime that sends a group of high school students adrift into another world. I was excited to watch this one when I first heard about it, and while the premise shows promise, Sonny Boy quickly spirals into an overambitious mess. The introspective nature and dreamlike atmosphere seem tailor-made for philosophical pondering, but none of the ideas introduced are given room to develop properly. Instead, the series continually piles on new characters and concepts until the narrative becomes needlessly complicated.

Visually striking but lacking in substance, Sonny Boy wants to explore complex themes of identity and purpose but only scratches the surface before moving on to the next half-baked idea. Some viewers may find value in the avant-garde approach, but most will be left scratching their heads, wondering what any of it was really about. An artistic swing and a miss, Sonny Boy serves as a lesson that dazzling style means little without strong storytelling to back it up. That being said, this is a show worth diving into and giving a look for yourself; the animation alone makes it one to check out, even if you don’t stick around for the full series run.

28) My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!

The Best Isekai Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Sitting at 31 on our list of best isekai anime is the whimsical romantic comedy My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! Our reincarnated protagonist is plunged into her favourite otome game world as Catarina Claes — who just happens to be the villainess whose bad ends involve getting exiled or even killed.

Yet with her meta-knowledge of the game’s routes, Catarina hilariously manages to accidentally charm every capture target that should despise her. I was skeptical at first, but this one grew on me. It is an unpredictable romp as we watch Miss Villainess determinedly bake sweets and tend gardens to avoid those “doom” flags. While a tad repetitive, My Next Life as a Villainess wins points for upending isekai and otome game tropes. Catarina makes for an affable and refreshingly pragmatic lead, even if she does play things a bit too safe.

27) Good Night World

The Best Isekai Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Landing at number 28 on our list of best Isekai is Netflix’s dark horse, Good Night World. This psychological anime takes the popular “trapped in a game” premise and infuses it with some welcome maturity. We follow the dysfunctional Arima family as they escape into the virtual world of Planet MMORPG, unaware they are actually adventuring together. What seems like standard escapist fare at first glance slowly reveals itself to be a raw examination of how the characters use the game to cope with their mental health issues and traumatic home lives.

While it gets bogged down at times by its split focus, Good Night World ultimately succeeds thanks to its sombre tone, stark visuals straight out of a cyberpunk dystopia, and nuanced exploration of sensitive themes like depression and domestic abuse. It likely won’t appeal to the casual Isekai fan looking for power fantasies and fanservice.

26) So I’m a Spider, So What?

The Best Isekai Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Coming in at #26 is the Isekai fantasy anime series, So I’m a Spider, So What?. This 24-episode adaptation follows an ordinary high school girl who dies and reincarnates as a spider monster in a dangerous fantasy world. While the reincarnation premise sets up an intriguing survival story, the series struggles to balance humour and drama.

The animation quality is strong, with fluid battle scenes and imaginative monster designs. However, the pacing feels slow at times, with excessive internal monologues from the protagonist that disrupt the flow. So I’m a Spider, So What? has an entertaining premise but fails to fully capitalize on its potential. Diehard Isekai fans may still find enjoyment from the creative world and monster battles, but most viewers will likely find the story and characters too uneven to become fully invested.

25) Reborn as a Vending Machine, I Now Wander the Dungeon

The Best Isekai Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Coming in at #25 on our list of best Isekai anime is the utterly wacky Reborn as a Vending Machine, I Now Wander the Dungeon. I’ll be honest: when I first heard about an anime where the protagonist is reincarnated as a vending machine, I was skeptical. But this fantasy anime streaming on Crunchyroll manages to execute its bonkers premise with surprising heart. Our vending machine hero teams up with some eccentric adventurers to traverse a dangerous dungeon, using his mechanical powers to support the team.

Sure, the characters like knight Fran and mage Lammis are a bit one-note. And the stakes don’t feel all that high since, well, he’s a vending machine. But the anime still manages to tell a charming story about finding friendship in unexpected places. Reborn as a Vending Machine proves that even the most ridiculous Isekai concept can make for wholesome entertainment if handled carefully, even if it may not revolutionize the genre.

24) Grimgar: Ashes And Illusions

The Best Isekai Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Landing at #24 is Grimgar: Ashes and Illusions, a fantasy Isekai with a darker, more grounded tone and an easy anime to watch if you are looking for the best Isekai. Instead of overpowered MCs blasting their way to easy success, we get a ragtag group of amnesiacs struggling to survive in a harsh new world. They have to slowly learn actual combat tactics as they take on weak slimes and goblins, scraping by to earn copper pieces from each kill.

It’s a refreshing change of pace from the typical power trip plots. The show captures the dire feeling of being stranded with no resources or plots armour to save you. The hand-painted art and backgrounds also nicely set the sombre, desperate mood. However, Grimgar doesn’t quite stick the landing, as the slow pace and repetitive monster battles sometimes drag it. The characters also fail to form memorable connections. Still, even with the single-season we got, Grimgar deserves credit for its bold, more realistic take on the oversaturated isekai genre. It tries to bring protagonists back down to earth, with mixed results.

24) The Rising Of The Shield Hero

The Best Isekai Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Coming in at #24 on our rankings of the best Isekai is The Rising of the Shield Hero, an anime featuring Naofumi Iwatani, who is summoned as one of four heroes meant to save a fantasy kingdom. Though it explores some interesting ideas around morality and the concept of heroism, The Rising of the Shield Hero ultimately falls short. Naofumi faces numerous challenges as the unappreciated Shield Hero, but the show leans too heavily on overused tropes.

While the premise shows promise, the execution lacks enough originality or nuance to make this a standout isekai. Some viewers may connect with Naofumi’s underdog status, yet the series does little to subvert common genre pitfalls. The Rising of the Shield Hero brings too few fresh perspectives to move higher on this list. It delivers a serviceable fantasy adventure for Isekai fans but doesn’t have the depth or innovation to be considered one of the timeless classics.

23) Log Horizon

The Best Isekai Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Securing its place at #23 in our ranking of the best Isekai of all time is Log Horizon, the thinking person’s Sword Art Online. Don’t expect nonstop action here. Log Horizon is more about strategy than spectacle. When players become trapped in the MMORPG Elder Tale, socially awkward guild master Shiroe leads the charge to figure things out. What makes Log Horizon stand out is its meticulous worldbuilding and focus on politics. It really leans into the mechanics of an MMO.

That said, there’s still plenty of adventuring with Shiroe’s crew, like swashbuckling assassin Akatsuki and Shiroe’s old pal Naotsugu. The pacing drags at times, but fans of hardcore fantasy and MMO minutiae will find a lot to love in Log Horizon’s devotion to complex systems and steadfast character development. This an easy entry on our list of best Isekai; just don’t expect the flashy fights of other trapped-in-a-game shows. Log Horizon cares more about the details than big CGI battles.

22) Digimon Adventure

The Best Isekai Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Landing at #22 on our list of best Isekai anime is Digimon Adventure. This 2020 reboot of the classic franchise sees a new group of kids transported to the Digital World, a parallel universe inhabited by magical creatures. With 54 episodes across two seasons, Digimon Adventure delivers episodic adventures as the gang travels across the Digital World. While the plot pacing and stakes feel inconsistent at times, the series offers silly fun if you’re in it for one-off escapades rather than an intricate storyline.

With higher production values but weaker characterization compared to the original, this Digimon retread banks heavily on nostalgia. Still, as far as Isekai anime goes, you could do worse for a harmless romp with supernatural monsters. Parents won’t mind their kids tuning in, either. Just don’t expect the emotional impact of classics like Inuyasha or Vision of Escaflowne from this modest addition to the isekai genre.

21) Sword Art Online

The Best Isekai Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Perhaps one of the most well-known Isikai anime, Sword Art Online, kicks off with an intriguing premise: players get trapped in a virtual MMORPG where death in-game means death in real life. However, it quickly squanders its potential. Protagonist Kirito swiftly becomes an overpowered Gary Stu, robbing the show of meaningful conflict. Supporting characters fare a little better; most exist solely to worship Kirito or act as damsels for him to rescue. And don’t get me started on the infamous Fairy Dance arc, widely criticized for its uncomfortable incestual overtones in the second season.

While Sword Art Online delivers some exciting animation and fight scenes, its poor writing and characterization make it a mediocre Isekai at best. There’s a reason it ranks so low on this list of best Isekai: SAO simply failed to live up to its ambitious vision. It’s not without merit and still made our ranking of best Isekai, but far better options await anime fans willing to dig deeper into the genre.

20) Drifters

The Best Isekai Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Landing at #20 is Drifters, based on a manga by Hellsing creator Kouta Hirano. This bloody action series throws famous historical fighters into a fantasy world on the brink of war. Samurai Shimazu Toyohisa faces off against legions of elves and other mythical creatures, crossing swords with the likes of Nobunaga Oda and Nasu no Yoichi along the way.

While light on plot, often opting for spectacle and action over story, Drifters delivers thrilling battle sequences as the ragtag band of warriors clashes with magicians and monsters. Hirano’s signature style brings dramatic flair to the ultraviolence, with arterial sprays and dismemberments aplenty. Fans of his previous works will feel right at home.

Some awkward humour sometimes dispels the grim mood, like Nobunaga’s “monkey” battle cry. But the banter also humanizes these larger-than-life figures. Drifters hits the spot if you’re looking for a gritty, exhilarating anime with an edge of dark comedy and solid entry on our rankings of best Isekai. Just don’t expect much depth beyond the adrenaline rush.

19) The Devil Is a Part-Timer!

The Best Isekai Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Landing at #19 is The Devil Is a Part-Timer!, a comedy isekai with a twist. When Satan is defeated in battle, he and his loyal general flee their world and end up in modern-day Japan. Down on his luck, Satan takes a part-time job at MgRonald’s (totally not McDonald’s) while plotting his return.

It’s a goofy premise played straight — seeing the demon lord of legend slinging fries is pretty funny. And while the show works best when keeping things light, it does try to have genuine stakes in its climax that end up falling flat. Still, The Devil Is a Part-Timer! earns its spot on the list for sheer entertainment value. I mean, who hasn’t imagined their boss being secretly Satan? If you like your Isekai with extra laughs and a side of fries, this one delivers.

18) Ya Boy Kongming!

The Best Isekai Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Waking up in the future at #18 on our ranking of best Isekai is the 2022 sleeper hit Ya Boy Kongming!, which sees famed ancient Chinese tactician Zhuge Liang reincarnated in modern-day Tokyo. After dying from illness in ancient China, Kongming’s final wish is to be reborn in a world without war so he can pursue his dreams of music and beauty. He pursues them, and he teams up with aspiring singer Eiko to take the Japanese pop scene by storm with his gift for strategy, you know as you do.

With gorgeous animation from studio P.A. Works bringing manga creators Yū Sasuga and Kanata Konami’s vision to life, Ya Boy Kongming! is an upbeat crowd-pleaser. While a bit light on the plot at times, its earnest charm and catchy tunes make Kongming! an easy recommendation for Isekai fans looking for something outside the normal fantasy fare. After watching, just try not to have that darn OP stuck in your head!

17) Now And Then, Here And There

The Best Isekai Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Landing at #17 is the 1999 dark fantasy Now And Then, Here And There. Don’t let the mid-tier ranking fool ya, this anime brings an imaginative, impactful story despite some flaws holding it back. Transporting its main character Shu to the desolate, war-torn world of Hellywood, NATHT explores heavy themes like slavery and assault through a child soldier’s perspective.

While appreciated, the constant misery does get tiring. And Shu’s personality, like the setting itself, feels pretty one-note. But the insane, Hitler-esque villain Hamdo still gives me chills. His cruelty and obsession with torture pushed NATHT into a rare, disturbing space for anime at the time. Between the ambitious narrative, emotional highs and lows, and that chilling villain, Now And Then, Here And There deserves a spot on this list of best Isekai. Just don’t marathon it unless you want to feel depressed for a week!

16) .hack//SIGN

The Best Isekai Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Landing at #16 on our list of the best Isekai of all time is 2002’s .hack//SIGN. This anime throws viewers into a mysterious virtual MMO world where player Tsukasa finds himself unable to log out. Trapped in the game, Tsukasa encounters other players as they try to unravel the secrets behind his predicament

While .hack//SIGN delivers an immersive storyline with cryptic plot twists that will keep you guessing, some viewers felt the payoff wasn’t fully satisfying after investing 26 episodes. Still, this retro streaming series pioneered the trapped-in-a-video-game genre and inspired future Isekai hits like Sword Art Online. If you’re craving an engrossing, mind-bending anime mystery, .hack//SIGN brings the intrigue even if it falls a bit short on conclusions.

15) Magic Knight Rayearth

The Best Isekai Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Coming in at #15 on our list of best Isekai is the classic Magic Knight Rayearth. This 1994 fantasy anime throws three ordinary schoolgirls into the magical world of Cephiro, where they become the legendary Magic Knights. They must save Princess Emeraude from the clutches of High Priest Zagato. The Magical Warriors theme is fun, with the girls gaining colourful armour and weapons as they battle various monsters. While the plot is relatively simple, the characters keep things entertaining with their diverse personalities and relationships.

The anime explores themes of destiny, duty, and friendship. The three girls complement each other nicely: Hikaru is impulsive, Umi is level-headed, and Fuu is analytical. They grow into badass heroes who take on their responsibility to save Cephiro. The music and visuals are also magnificent. While Magic Knight Rayearth has some filler episodes that slow the pacing, it delivers an enjoyable isekai adventure overall.

14) Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation

The Best Isekai Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Landing at #14 is Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation, an Isekai that diverges from the common trope with its darker themes and flawed protagonist. Despite premiering in 2021, Mushoku Tensei is considered the grandfather of the genre for popularizing many of its tropes. What sets it apart is the exceptional character depth and development and the rich world filled with creative races and locales.

While divisive due to its more mature content, there’s no denying that Mushoku Tensei features a compelling narrative. We watch the perverted main character, Rudeus Greyrat, grow from his deplorable beginnings into a better person through his struggles and relationships in his new magical world. It’s this redemption arc, coupled with the show’s incredible animation and music, that helped kick off the recent Isekai craze.

13) No Game, No Life

The Best Isekai Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Crashing in at #13 on our list of best Isekai is 2014’s No Game, No Life, which throws gaming prodigies Sora and Shiro into a fantastical world ruled by games. After the genius NEET siblings get whisked from their mundane life to the vibrant realm of Disboard, their unbeatable gaming skills make them a force to be reckoned with against magical beings like gods and sprites.

What makes No Game, No Life unique is its central conceit — all conflicts in this world are resolved through high-stakes games instead of violence. Watching Sora and Shiro take on increasingly absurd challenges with their signature wit makes this show a total riot. No Game, No Life also stuns with its wildly creative visuals, using colour and motion to amplify the energy and excitement. While sometimes repetitive, No Game, No Life offers a fun twist on the isekai genre that provides thrill after thrill.

12) Campfire Cooking in Another World With My Absurd Skill

The Best Isekai Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Cooking up a storm at #12 on our list of the best Isekai anime is Campfire Cooking In Another World With My Absurd Skill. This 2024 cooking anime follows protagonist Mukouda, who is mysteriously transported from modern-day Japan to a fantasy world. There, Mukouda discovers he has an “absurd skill” for campfire cooking, which comes in handy on his adventures with elven hunter Fel and priestess Sui.

While it delivers some feel-good moments, Campfire Cooking lacks compelling stakes or character growth. The story plays it safe, with the trio easily overcoming any obstacles thanks to Mukouda’s convenient cooking talents. Still, Studio Mappa’s smooth animation and vibrant art style aptly capture the whimsical tone. Fans of slice-of-life fantasy will find the lighthearted humour and mouthwatering cooking scenes rather comforting amid today’s heavy headlines. It’s an easygoing isekai romp that goes down smoothly but won’t leave a lasting flavour.

11) GATE

The Best Isekai Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Opening a portal to #11 is GATE, a fun twist on the classic Isekai formula and a fun entry on our rankings of best Isekai. When a portal connecting modern-day Tokyo to a fantasy world appears, the Japanese military sets up shop on the other side. Otaku soldier Itami Youji leads the charge, whose encyclopedic knowledge of anime and manga proves unexpectedly useful. GATE sets itself apart with its near-future setting and focus on military politics. The Japanese Self-Defense Forces bring their modern weaponry and technology to the medieval fantasy realm, leading to plenty of one-sided skirmishes.

Despite the action, GATE never takes itself too seriously. Itami lightens the mood with his otaku antics, while the colourful voice cast keeps things lively. Though more of an action series than a strict Isekai, GATE puts an entertaining spin on the humans-trapped-in-another-world formula. Its modern sensibilities and tongue-in-cheek tone make it a great gateway anime for viewers new to the Isekai genre.

10) Overlord

The Best Isekai Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Ruling over #10 with an iron fist on our list of best Isekai is Overlord, a dark Isekai anime with a twist. Our protagonist, Momonga, finds himself trapped inside his favourite MMORPG, Yggdrasil, after the servers shut down. Except now, the game world is his real world. Calling himself Ainz Ooal Gown, Momonga must navigate this new land with the help of his loyal NPC servants.

What makes Overlord stand out is its morally grey protagonist. Unlike classic hero isekai tales, Ainz freely uses his overwhelming power from the game to further his own ends in the new world. With stunning visuals bringing the dark fantasy world to life, Overlord puts a fresh spin on the increasingly popular Isekai genre. While the pacing falters at times, Momonga’s sheer menace and the show’s RPG roots still make Overlord a must-watch for gamers and Isekai fans alike after all these years. Just don’t expect a heroic tale!

9) The Eminence in Shadow

The Best Isekai Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Crashing in through the window at #9 on our list of best Isekai is The Eminence in Shadow, a 2022 satirical anime that pokes fun at common Isekai tropes. Our protagonist, Shadow, is reincarnated into a fantasy world where he leverages his secret organization and overpowered abilities to take on the evil factions, serving up plenty of action and hilarity.

While the plot and characters are admittedly over-the-top, that’s fully by design. The show is meta, using an absurd premise to parody tired Isekai conventions. Mixing self-serious action, a protagonist who is diluted in the best possible way, and some banana ideas that will leave you questioning the logic of the world, The Eminence in Shadow straddles the line between shlock and must-watch TV.

Released by Nexus studio, you can watch both currently available seasons, subbed or dubbed on HiDive, giving you plenty of nonsense action for your viewing pleasure. Whether you’re a seasoned Isekai fan looking for some clever commentary or a newcomer seeking an accessible entry point, The Eminence in Shadow brings the perfect blend of fantasy, comedy, and self-awareness to shake up a saturated genre.

8) Uncle from Another World

The Best Isekai Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Waking from a coma at #8 is the hilarious reverse Isekai Uncle from Another World. This unconventional anime flips the overplayed Isekai genre on its head by bringing the uncle character back from a fantasy world to modern-day Japan. What ensues is a quirky fish-out-of-water tale filled with cultural confusion, magical mishaps, and laugh-out-loud comedy.

Despite his all-powerful abilities like teleportation and lightning attacks, his bumbling Uncle can’t seem to get the hang of smartphones, streaming services, or anything else in the modern world. His nerdy nephew tries his best to help Uncle adjust while also dealing with his weird magical outbursts. With tons of otaku references and a uniquely imperfect protagonist, Uncle from Another World breathes new life into the tired Isekai formula. You’ll be grinning from ear to ear, watching Uncle’s misadventures on his popular YouTube channel as he continues to wreak havoc with his uncontrollable powers.

7) Restaurant to Another World

The Best Isekai Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Opening its doors at #7 is the drool-worthy fantasy anime Restaurant to Another World. This relaxing 12-episode series follows a small restaurant that secretly serves as a portal between the human world and a fantasy realm filled with elves, demons, and other magical beings. Whenever the restaurant’s doors open on days it’s normally closed, hungry customers from the other world happily flock in to sample delicious comfort food lovingly prepared by the restaurant’s chef and his daughter.

Gorgeously animated scenes of steaming hot pots, mouthwatering pastries, and succulent meat dishes are sure to make your stomach growl. While light on plot, Restaurant to Another World casts a soothing spell with its whimsical portal premise, endearing characters, scenic worldbuilding, and scrumptious anime food porn that looks good enough to reach through the screen and devour. It’s a tasty morsel of an Isekai anime that will leave you hungry for more.

6) That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime

The Best Isekai Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Coming in at #6 is the inventive Isekai That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. When an ordinary 37-year-old Tokyo salaryman dies, his soul is transported into a fantasy world — but rather than becoming a mighty hero, he’s reborn as a lowly slime monster. What makes this anime stand out is its imaginative world-building and endearing characters.

Our slime protagonist, Rimuru Tempest, quickly befriends dragons, ogres, goblins and more while establishing his own monster nation. There’s plenty of lighthearted fun as Rimuru adjusts to his new slime body, but the anime also explores thoughtful themes about leadership, morality and prejudice. While the animation and pacing falter in places, the appeal of watching Rimuru overcome adversity, even in slime form, cements this Isekai’s place as a must-watch. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime offers an escapist portal into a colourful fantasy realm filled with possibilities.

5) Inuyasha

The Best Isekai Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Coming in at #5 on our list of the best Isekai anime is the classic Inuyasha. This action-packed fantasy series originally aired from 2000-2004 and still holds up incredibly well today. When modern-day schoolgirl Kagome Higurashi falls down an ancient well on her family’s shrine, she finds herself transported 500 years back in time to Japan’s violent Sengoku period.

There, she meets the hot-headed half-demon Inuyasha, who was sealed to a tree for 50 years. After accidentally shattering the powerful Shikon Jewel, Kagome and Inuyasha reluctantly join forces to track down the missing shards across feudal Japan — all while battling evil demons and facing their own brewing feelings for one another. With its creative plot blending ancient Japanese folklore and mythology with plenty of humour and heart, Inuyasha is an Isekai tale for the ages. Its masterful world-building, spirited heroine and half-demon hunk contribute to a nostalgic viewing experience you won’t soon forget.

4) The Vision of Escaflowne

The Best Isekai Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Landing at #4 on our list of the best Isekai Anime is the classic fantasy mecha series The Vision of Escaflowne from 1996. This show transports high school girl Hitomi from Earth to the mystical world of Gaea where she crosses paths with Van Fanel, the exiled prince of Fanelia. Together, they get caught up in Van’s fight against the Zaibach Empire and their elite Guymelefs mecha pilots.

With its sweeping orchestral soundtrack, gorgeous hand-drawn animation, and blend of fantasy, mecha, romance, and action genres, Escaflowne was revolutionary for its time. The dub cast, including Kirby Morrow, Kelly Sheridan, Brian Drummond and Jocelyne Loewen, turns in fantastic performances that have stood the test of time. Over 20 years later, Escaflowne remains a riveting and emotional viewing experience, though the ending leaves something to be desired. Still, between the rich world-building, compelling characters, and epic mecha battles, Escaflowne earns its place among the Isekai greats. This influential classic is not to be missed by any fantasy or mecha anime fan!

3) Saga Of Tanya The Evil

The Best Isekai Anime Of All Time, Ranked

The dark military fantasy tale Saga of Tanya the Evil comes in at #3 on the list of best Isekai. I still get chills when I hear the opening song with its intense chorus chanting Gloria, Gloria. This 2017 anime throws viewers right into an alternative early 20th-century Europe ravaged by magic-enhanced warfare. Except the commander leading the troops isn’t some grizzled old general — it’s a petite blonde girl named Tanya! Don’t let her cute appearance fool you, though. Tanya is cunning, ruthless, and not afraid to get her hands dirty on the battlefield.

She used to be an amoral Japanese salaryman before being reincarnated by God into this world as punishment. The way Tanya leverages her modern strategic knowledge to rise up the ranks makes for some ingeniously entertaining scenes. And I’d be remiss without mentioning her wonderfully expressive crazy eyes whenever she goes into full madness mode. With its unique premise, great worldbuilding, and masterful storytelling, Saga of Tanya the Evil earns its place among the best isekai out there. If you’re into military anime, put this one on your watchlist!

2) Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World

The Best Isekai Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Landing at #2 on our list of best Isekai is 2016’s Re:Zero, which took the Isekai genre to new emotional depths. Our hapless hero, Subaru Natsuki, finds himself summoned to a fantasy world, but unlike typical Isekai fare, he has no magical abilities or special skills. Things go south fast, leading to some brutal deaths that trigger Return by Death, an ability allowing Subaru to resurrect at certain points after dying.

What makes Re:Zero stand out is this unique spin on the “reborn in a fantasy land” premise. Subaru’s painful deaths and endless anguish as he struggles to change fate deliver gut-wrenching drama rarely seen in the genre. We watch him slowly transform from a cocky NEET to a broken man clinging to his sanity. The anime pulls no punches depicting his suffering and personal growth. Even side characters like the devious Elsa and mysterious Echidna are memorable for their complex motivations.

Re:Zero flips Isekai conventions with ruthless battles of wit and willpower. If you want fantasy with incredible emotional depth, it’s a must-watch.

1) KonoSuba: God’s Blessing On This Wonderful World

The Best Isekai Anime Of All Time, Ranked

Claiming the top spot on our best Isekai anime list is KonoSuba: God’s Blessing On This Wonderful World, a fantasy comedy that brilliantly satirizes the oversaturated “stuck in another world” genre. The premise follows Kazuma, an underachieving gamer who dies pathetically and gets reincarnated in a fantasy realm. There, the useless goddess Aqua mockingly offers him either eternal paradise or a dangerous do-over in a magical RPG-like world.

Naturally, Kazuma picks the latter but soon regrets it when he’s saddled with the most incompetent party ever: Aqua herself, who can only cast one spell per day; Megumin, an explosion-obsessed mage; and Darkness, a masochistic knight who can’t hit anything. Together, they fumble through hilarious misadventures, scamming and struggling their way toward defeating the Demon King.

While KonoSuba nails the adventuring hijinks, its characters really make the show. Their quirks, camaraderie, and self-aware banter breathe life into tired tropes. Doubly funny for gaming fans, KonoSuba affectionately roasts Isekai clichés with meta gags and spot-on satire. It brings the most essential ingredient for a great comedy anime: laughs that never end.
