Here is a breakdown of all the winners from the Anime Awards 2024, which was livestreamed worldwide and took place in Tokyo this weekend.
The highest pinnacle of anime recognition was back in Tokyo this morning (or night, depending if you were down there for the awards show). The Crunchyroll Anime Awards for 2024 took place at Tokyo’s Grand Prince Hotel New Takanawa again, honouring the creators, musicians and performances across the anime industry. Like last year’s Anime Awards ceremony, it was also hosted by voice actress Sally Amaki and entertainer Jon Kabira for another year. The battle for best anime of the year was another tough one, with 34 million votes cast by fans worldwide!
Kicking off the grand opening of the show, Hiroyuki SAWANO and KOHTA YAMAMOTO performed the Anime Awards 2024 theme song to open the show. Chairman and CEO of Sony Group Corporation Kenichiro Yoshida welcomed everyone to the show and made his opening remarks for the Anime Awards live ceremony, noting his respect for those “with their special crafts.” He continued explaining how Crunchyroll has dedicated its efforts in the belief that “anime has the power to connect people all around the world.” There is no doubt anime has brought together new and old friends for me!
The massive celebration was stacked with an abundance of guest presenters. The presenters included many celebrity fans from around the world and fellow otakus alike, from all walks of life and distinguishing backgrounds! Here is the long, exhaustive list of the presenters at the Anime Awards:
- Actress, singer, and model Chiaki Kuriyama
- Rapper and singer Megan Thee Stallion
- Director of Snowpiercer & Parasite Bong Joon Ho
- Actress in Ms. Marvel & The Marvels Iman Vellani
- NFL Football player from the Dallas Cowboys, DeMarcus Lawrence
- Professional streamer, variety player, cosplayer, and co-host of Steak & Eggs, Emiru
- Director of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Joaquim Dos Santos
- GRAMMY-nominated songwriter, producer and recording artist, Labrinth
- Actress, advocate and entrepreneur, Liza Soberano
- Former WWE World Champion, actress and entrepreneur, Mercedes Varnado
- Fashion creator Nava Rose
- Academy Award-winning duo behind Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Phil Lord & Chris Miller
- GRAMMY-nominated musician Porter Robinson
- Film actor Rashmika Mandanna
- Japanese TV personality, comedian, actor and former Japanese decathlon champion, So Takei
- Model, pro gamer, actor and digital creator, Vinnie Hacker
Throughout the Anime Awards show, there were some awesome musical performances! Shing02 with OMA and SPIN MASTER A-1 brought back the jazz rap beats of “battlecry” from Samurai Champloo to celebrate the series’ 20th anniversary. The nostalgia was real for me, as someone who listened to a lot of Nujabes-produced songs from the series.
I also thoroughly enjoyed the medley the Anime Awards orchestra put together, compiling some of the most iconic anime openings of all-time—from Gundam, One Piece to my childhood favourite series Fullmetal Alchemist. Then, the Japanese pop duo which stayed number one on Billboard Japan for 21 consecutive weeks (the first musical group/artist to do so) YOASOBI made a spectacular performance, ahead of their set at the upcoming music festival Coachella 2024.
The final showdown for Anime of the Year came down to BOCCHI THE ROCK!, Chainsaw Man, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Swordsmith Village Arc, JUJUTSU KAISEN Season 2, 【OSHI NO KO】and Vinland Saga Season 2. At the end of the night, JUJUTSU KAISEN Season 2 took home 8 huge wins in the main categories. With no surprise, it won Anime of the Year! It was followed by Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Swordsmith Village Arc with a 3 solid wins for themselves. Overall, the spread of awards was a pleasure to see!
