Celebrated RPG Darkest Dungeon will soon be getting a physical release for Nintendo Switch and Playstation 4.
The Ancestral Edition of the game will come to Nintendo Switch and Playstation 4 in March of this year and will retail for $39.99 USD and $29.99 USD respectively. Both The Crimson Court and The Shieldbreaker DLC packs will be included in the release.
This news came in a press release from privately owned video game publisher, Merge Games Ltd. They are partnering with game developer Red Hook Studios to release the physical version of the game.
Tyler Sigman, Co-President of Red Hook Studios says that they’re “thrilled for people to have the option to buy a retail box…and we’re going to be keeping a few copies in our personal libraries, too!” Sigman went on to say that, “Many fans have been clamouring for a physical edition of the game, and Merge Games was the right partner to help us get this done!”
Merge Games’ Managing Director, Luke Keighran, stressed that the company is “over the moon to be working with Red Hook Studios. Darkest Dungeon is a fantastic brand and working with the Red Hook team has been a joy. We believe Darkest Dungeon: Ancestral Edition will be warmly welcomed by retailers and fans alike.”
Darkest Dungeon is a role playing game that has you exploring dungeons below a demon infested mansion with your own team of flawed oddballs. It manages to combine elements of Lovecraftian horror and standard RPG elements, while also blazing its own path. On top of the horrifying creatures you face, you also have to control your teams stress levels, or risk them going insane.
Originally released, in January of 2016, Darkest Dungeon received notoriety for its unforgiving gameplay. It was, however, warmly received by critics, for its haunting art direction and deep combat, and received an 83% score on review aggregator site Metacritic. We gave Darkest Dungeon an 8.5/10, calling it a “bleak and cruel game,” and one of the best games that the reviewer had ever played.
The original Darkest Dungeon is currently available for Playstation 4, Nintendo Switch, Microsoft Windows, OS X, Linux, PlayStation Vita and iPad.
