Del Toro Speaks Up About Silent Hills

Del Toro Speaks Up About Silent Hills 1

After some months of radio silence, famed director Guilermo del Toro finally spoke out about the cancellation of Konami’s Silent Hills. It turns out, he’s just as baffled as the rest of us. He’s been busy with the promotion of his upcoming flick Crimson Peak, but during an interview with news outlet Bloody Disgusting, the topic came up.

“[It] makes no fucking sense at all,” says del Toro, “We had a great experience and had great story sessions with hundreds upon hundreds of designs.”

Perhaps it was just the wrong fit at the wrong time for del Toro to make his gaming debut, but if the Silent Hills demo PT was any indication of the direction they were taking the series, it felt like they were on the right track, and del Toro agrees. “The thing with Kojima and Silent Hills is that I thought we would do a really remarkable game and really go for the jugular,” says the director.

It’s got to really hurt to see how well Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain sold on it’s launch date. Grossing $179 million on its opening day, Kojima’s final take on the series outdid Avengers: Age of Ultron. It makes one wonder what Kojima’s stamp along with del Toro’s name recognition could have done for Silent Hills.

It’s sort of shocking that we’ll never see the title, and del Toro shares that same sense of confusion. “That makes no fucking sense at all that the game is not happening,” says del Toro.

The director has left the door open to working on a future project with Kojima, in a prior interview with IGN, he stated the two still keep in touch, so maybe something can happen down the line. As for the Silent Hill series, I guess we can all enjoy a new pachinko machine.
