The future is now!

DeLorean Returns With The Gull-winged New Alpha 5 Electric Vehicle 2

DeLorean Motor company returns with an attempt to revive the iconic DeLorean DMC-12 from Back to the Future as an electric vehicle.

If you were a fan of time travel, then you must’ve seen the 1980s famous Back to the Future trilogy and its biggest star, the DMC-12. Famous for its futuristic looks, the car features a gull-winged door that opens up to mimic a gull taking flight. However, the company that manufactured them went bankrupt and made only around 9 thousand units.

Even though the company went bankrupt, it was sold in 1995 and owned by the current CEO Stephen Wynne. He loved the DMC-12 and restored old ones with the new parts he received from his takeover of the company. After nearly two decades of silence, in 2019 Wynne hinted that he would be creating an electric based DeLorean. With electric vehicles now being the main focus of the current generation of cars, he finally revealed that he would be producing an electric car variant of the classic DMC-12 in a tweet stating, “The next generation of DeLorean is coming into focus August 18, 2022”

“If you’re gonna build an electric vehicle, why not do it with style?”

Fast forwarding to the present, Wynne announced the Alpha 5 Electric Vehicle. While retaining the main features of the DMC-12, he expanded upon the equipment used and planned a new and improved version of the iconic vehicle. The Alpha 5 is estimated to have a 100 kWh battery that offers a top speed of 155 mph – that’s much faster than the original. With a look that almost stays true to the original, the car is 5 meters long and 2 meters wide, and it maintains the recognizable gull-winged doors. Being much bigger than its predecessor, it has enough cabin space for 4 seats; a complete revival of the classic DMC-12.

With the grand reveal of the Alpha 5 on August 18, 2022, Wynne plans to have the event take place in Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance as one of the attractions. Since we won’t be able to see the Alpha 5 in action, we can only look at the previews on their website until then.
