Grand Theft Auto V sales hits $1 billion, breaks record

Grand Theft Auto V has become the fastest entertainment product to reach $1 billion, bumping Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 out of its record holding position.

According to estimates released by publisher Take-Two Interactive, it took only three days for the juggernaut of sandbox games to reach the $1 billion mark.

Grand Theft Auto is a cultural phenomenon and Rockstar Games continues to redefine what can be achieved in interactive entertainment,” said Strauss Zelnick, chairman and CEO of Take-Two. “We are incredibly proud of the extraordinary critical and commercial response to Grand Theft Auto V.

Last November Black Ops 2 grossed $1 billion 15 days after its launch, one day faster than 2011’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and two days faster than the top three blockbuster movies to hit the magic number: Avatar, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, and The Avengers.
