Based on parts of Martin’s 2018 book Fire & Blood, the series, set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, tells the story of House Targaryen and their bloody conquest to maintain control of the Iron Throne. However, unlike its predecessor, it is marked more by personal drama and interpersonal conflict, as House Targaryen is split not only by the other houses of the Realm, but within itself.

House of the Dragon Season 3 is set to feature an incredible ensamble cast including: Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Steve Toussaint, Rhys Ifans, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Tom Glynn-Carney, Sonoya Mizuno, Harry Collett, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Phia Saban, Jefferson Hall, Matthew Needham, James Norton, Tom Bennett, Kieran Bew, Kurt Egyiawan, Freddie Fox, Clinton Liberty, Gayle Rankin, Abubakar Salim, Tom Cullen, Tommy Flanagan, Dan Fogler, Joplin Sibtain, and Barry Sloane.

House of the Dragon has seen favourable reviews with Season 1 holding an approval rating of 90% based on 875 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, while Season 2 has a rating of 84% based on 283 reviews. However, Season 2 had a debut of 7.8 million viewers across linear and streaming on its Sunday night premiere, which was a 22 percent decline from the previous season, which had 10 million.

House of the Dragon Season 3 premieres on June 21, 2026, on HBO Max.
