New Dev Diary Goes Over LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight's Batcave Experience

A newly released developer diary has revealed how the Batcave works and functions in the upcoming LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight.

The diary is narrated by the Strategic Director & Head of Development Team of TT Games, Jonathan Smith, and goes over how the Bat Cave works in the game. It starts out as just a hole in the ground, but as Batman gradually fights more and more crime over the years, it becomes the cave we all know and love. It is completely customizable too; you could install a weight bench, meditation mat, or, in true LEGO fashion, a toy rocket to ride on. You can even display trophies that you actively get from completed missions, like Joker’s Joker card.

We have never seen something like this from a Batman game; usually, the cave is already at its peak, but this game looks like it takes place over Batman’s entire career. The suits we have access to span from the first ever comic he appeared in to the most recent suit from the Absolute Batman comic run currently coming out. There are even suits from Batman’s weirder adventures, like the suit Batman of Zur-En-Arrh wore and the Rainbow Suit featured in Detective Comics #241.

Past the costumes, this trailer also showed off the upgrade system that the main characters get to take advantage of. Characters like Gordon, Catwoman, Nightwing, Batman himself, and more get access to personal upgrades that take advantage of their skill set. These upgrades vary from concussive Batarangs to a goop gun that Gordon uses to crowd-control enemies. Each of the seven playable characters in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight has their own skill tree, so the combat will feel fresh for each character.

The garage is also spacious enough to hold multiple decades of Batmobiles. From the original used in the 1966–1968 TV series to the jet-engine-powered monster we see in The Batman. And when you get back to the cave after a night patrolling, there is a selection of mini games to play, like pinball or a LEGO Batman 2D arcade game. There is also just the option to just chill out in the now-famous Bat Cave hot tub if that’s what the night calls for.

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is available on May 22nd, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store. Pre-orders for the Standard and Deluxe Editions are available now, with Deluxe edition buyers getting 72 hours of early access before the official release.
