Microsoft used Snapdragon Summit to unveil its next generation of portable Surface laptop and Pro hardware, led by new Snapdragon X2 Plus-powered Surface Pro and Surface Laptop models.
As many who have been following CGM’s coverage of Snapdragon Summit may know, there are a lot of announcements coming out of the event. CGM is on the ground covering the news (full disclosure: travel and lodging were paid for by Qualcomm, although no coverage was promised in exchange for the trip), and Microsoft took the opportunity to lift the curtain on its latest range of laptops. Taking the main stage, Microsoft revealed updated 12-inch Surface Pro and 13-inch Surface Laptop models built around Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon X2 Plus processor, alongside a redesigned Surface Mouse with built-in haptic feedback.
Both machines stick with the fanless, lightweight designs of their predecessors while promising meaningful gains under the hood. Compared with the first-generation models, Microsoft claims up to 17% faster performance in Office productivity workloads, 18% better battery efficiency, more than 60% faster graphics performance, and up to 95% faster local AI inferencing on the NPU. The company says its engineers worked directly with Qualcomm during silicon development to tune the chips for sustained performance, quiet thermals, and responsive on-device AI, with supported experiences able to run locally, in the cloud, or through a mix of both.
The 13-inch Surface Laptop remains the classic clamshell of the family, pairing a premium aluminum body, full-size backlit keyboard and precision touchpad with a taller 3:2 PixelSense touchscreen. The display is now 25% brighter at 500 nits, battery life is rated at up to 22.5 hours of local video playback and a new Black colour joins the lineup. Pricing starts at US$1,199, with availability set for Oct. 13 in select markets.
On the hybrid side, the 12-inch Surface Pro continues to trade on its tablet-to-laptop flexibility with the optional Surface Pro Keyboard and magnetically stored Surface Slim Pen, both sold separately. It introduces Microsoft Ink Canvas, an AI-powered, pen-first app for sketching, annotating, summarizing text and generating images. The app comes pre-installed and will also roll out to other supported Surface and Windows devices the same day. The Surface Pro starts at US$1,149.99, while commercial buyers will have access to an optional 5G configuration.
Rounding out the announcements, the new Surface Mouse packs haptic feedback into each click, along with an ambidextrous shell, a customizable Copilot button and Bluetooth 6.0 connectivity, for US$79.99. All three products go on sale Oct. 13.
