Monster Hunter Now Season 4: New Monsters, Habitat, Palico 1

Niantic announced details on Monster Hunter Now season 4, bringing many new features to the mobile game.

The Monster Hunter world continues to roar on through its first year anniversary in its mobile game Monster Hunter Now. Niantic is proud to present Monster Hunter Now season 4: Roars from the Winterwind. This new season brings the addition of the tundra habitat, where players will encounter monsters that live in icy regions like Tigrex. And that’s not all—an additional weapon type and Palico-related features are also on the way!

One of the most anticipated weapons in the Monster Hunter franchise: the Switch Axe. Players can now wield the Switch Axe, by completing the pre-season story Chapter 2. The Switch Axe lets you switch skillfully between two modes: the long-reaching Axe Mode and the fast-attacking Sword Mode. Build up the Switch Gauge while in Axe Mode and use it in Sword Mode to land a devastating blow.

The four new featured monsters for this update contains the Tigrex, Lagombi, Volvidon, and Somnacanth. Some of the returning monsters are Barioth and small monsters Wulg and Cortos, which have not been seen since the spring. Tigrex, Volvidon, and Somnacanth will appear on the field once you have unlocked them in urgent quests that occur within each chapter of the Season 4 story quest. Lagombi will start to appear once you have completed the prologue.

With more monsters, there will also be new skills to learn, including Critical Ferocity, Shared Shield and Morph Boost. Here are some descriptions, and tips and tricks for each of these four monsters featured in Monster Hunter Now season 4:

  • Tigrex – is a fast and ferocious monster. It is a tricky one to hit for its swift speed.
  • Lagombi – the armor set is a very warm cold weather look. It is a monster meant to be taken down with friends.
  • Volvidon – plays like an armadillo, making their rolling attacks tricky to deal with.
  • Somnacanth – has a massive frilly head and has some special attacks. This monster can be tricky to deal with up close, and can put hunters to sleep with its attacks.

The fun part of this major update is the new Palico features. Niantic stated how this personal Palico is seperate from the story Palico, so aesthetics is everything with this new personal Palico. Hunters will now have their own customizable Palico to assist with gathering materials and marking monsters on the field! Customize your personal Palico’s fur color, facial features, and even give it a name. The devs went crazy with the customization options where individual eye colours can be changed now. And don’t fear—you can still find the Palico you have come to know and love acting as Qualily’s assistant in the story and guides.

Niantic also detailed how much work they put into the AR capabilities with this personal Palico. Many of the AR features in Niantic’s other games like Pokémon Go have small mini games or interactive elements in the gameplay, with AR. Monster Hunter Now will now take full use of AR too. Players can expect to make their personal Palico do fun poses, and play mini games in AR.

Friend cheering was the next big feature coming with Monster Hunter Now season 4. A new cheer function will allow players to send encouragement to your friends. When received, cheers temporarily increase maximum health for the day. There is a health cap on the health boost from cheers, but will still be a mechanic to encourage hunting with friends.

A lot of fans wanted a reconfigured and expanded loadouts option. This update will have an increased number of loadouts. Also, ahead of Season 4 starting, you’ll be able to link driftsmelting skills to specific loadouts with the next update. Monster Hunter Now season 4 will have a new Season Pass, tailored to the new season. Remember: once season 4 begins, players will no longer be able to work on their season 3 tier—but players can still claim any rewards for a period of time.

Here is a list of monsters that will temporarily disappear from the field:
