In a press release yesterday, Motorola stated that the newest member of the Moto family would launch later in the month for $650 at Rogers, TELUS, and Koodo. Moto Mods will be unique attachments for the phone such as a speaker, a projector, a bigger battery, and something special for the camera.

The Moto Z Play is described in the release as “featuring a thin, lightweight design with a solid aluminum frame and elegant glass back,” with an approximate battery life of up to 45 hours. That solid frame will house 2GHz octa-core processor, a 5.5 inch 1080p HD Super AMOLED display, and 3GB of RAM. The back camera will shoot in 16MP on a laser autofocus camera, while the front camera will feature an LED flash.

Moto Mods will open up a whole new side of the phone, “you can transform your smartphone into exactly what you need it to be,” states the release. “The possibilities are endless.” A JBL SoundBoost speaker will bring your favourite music to life, and the Insta-Share projector can be used to show off videos and presentations alike. Incipio will also be producing a battery attachment to further increase the phone’s operation time.

Motorola have also teamed up with legendary camera company Hasselblad to produce the True Zoom Moto Mod. This camera attachment will feature 10x Optical Zoom and a Xenon flash, along with physical shutter and zoom controls which seek to add “advanced imaging capabilities to your phone.” Hasselblad has been a leader in the imaging industry since 1941, with some of history’s most iconic photos being taken on their cameras such as the first images from the Moon. The True Zoom will release sometime in October.

The Moto Z Play will be available in Canada later in September. Check back soon for CGM’s review.
