You might want to listen when F.E.A.R. 3 tells you to “F**king run.”

F.E.A.R. 3 is supposed to be a horror game, but it’s also a first person shooter, and that means that it’s got multiplayer. Fortunately, Day 1 Studios has opted for something other than the usual death match. The multiplayer will apparently cast you as one of the poor saps stuck with guard duty at the world’s least secure biological weapons facility, and as you might expect, you’re more interested in survival than state secrets.

Getting into the gameplay details, the best of the four modes may be the aptly titled “F**king Run” – you’ll have to flee Alma’s massive cloud of death and the entire team fails if one member succumbs to the fog – but the other modes seem to be pushing a similar survivor’s mentality. In “Contractions,” for instance, an isolated squad of soldiers will have to collect weapons and build barricades in order to fight through twenty waves of Alma’s minions, while in “Soul Survivor,” Alma will possess one of the team members and force him to turn against (and corrupt) his former allies.

Finally, there’s “Soul King,” which is the closest thing that F.E.A.R. 3 has to a free-for-all. Players will start as disembodied specters, and the goal is to possess and kill AI combatants (and other players) in order to score as many points as possible.

You can check out the various multiplayer modes in the screenshots and trailer below. It’s a pretty accurate depiction of what the average person would do in a life-or-death situation – I sure as hell wouldn’t stick around once Alma starts walking down the street – and I must admit that I like seeing a multiplayer mode that actually exercises logic.

F.E.A.R. 3 is slated for release at the end of May.
