Portal 2 “probably” Valve’s last isolated single-player experience

Portal 2 "probably" Valve's last isolated single-player experience

What does this mean for the future of Gordon Freeman?

Valve, the studio behind acclaimed solo titles like Half-Life 2 and Portal, is “probably” done with single-player games. That’s according to Valve founder Gabe Newell and project manager Erik Johnson, as reported by Geoff Keighley in his behind-the-scenes look at the making of Portal 2.

“Portal 2 will probably be Valve’s last game with an isolated single-player experience,” writes Keighley in the Final Hours of Portal 2. “What this all means is something Newell is still trying to figure out.”

The news is a bit shocking considering that Valve has called Portal 2 the best single player-experience they’ve ever created, and it’s definitely hard to believe that Valve could be done with solo gameplay. Then again, Portal 2 also included a separate cooperative campaign, so maybe future titles would follow a similar model. Co-op play with Alyx Vance might work in a traditionally solo franchise like Half-Life, and it would make more sense than doing away with story in an eventual Half-Life 3.
