Rockstar Games has officially confirmed development plans for Red Dead Online are winding down, and while the game will still be playable it won’t be receiving any major updates from here on out.
Rockstar announced the news in a lengthy post detailing the developer’s plans for the future, and how a majority of resources are shifting to the development of Grand Theft Auto 6.
To be clear, Red Dead Online will receive some content this year in the form of monthly events and new Telegram Missions. However, this does mean the game will never see any additional game modes, Specialist Roles, missions, or themed content updates. In the official post Rockstar states,
“We want to thank the community for their continued support. We are truly grateful for all the constructive feedback we’ve received up to this point and hope you keep it coming. This direct feedback from players has been instrumental to the ongoing success of both GTA Online and Red Dead Online — and an integral element of what helps us continue to evolve and improve as we push ahead towards the future.”
While Red Dead Online won’t be receiving major updates, the same can’t be said for GTA Online. Rockstar says “We’ll be working to improve the overall GTA Online experience with new gameplay updates, adding top community-requested experience improvements and upgrades to make it easier for players to enjoy everything GTA Online has to offer.”
GTA Online’s next update will “expand upon the Criminal Careers of Executive, Biker, Gunrunner, and Nightclub Owner,” and bring a set of new missions and gameplay changes, like reducing the effectiveness of homing missiles. The game will continue to receive seasonal updates, challenges, bonuses, and other new content.
GTA 6 is currently in development, but there’s currently no indication of a release window. There have been plenty of leaks and rumours, however, with one even indicating the new game could feature time travel.
