The first expansion will be free if you pre-order the upcoming first person shooter.

Battlefield 3 may not have a release date, but EA is already talking about DLC. The publisher has announced that the first expansion – titled Back to Karkand – will be included as a free pre-order incentive with Battlefield 3, and will use the Frostbite 2 engine to repackage four classic multiplayer maps from Battlefield 2. The four maps include Strike at Karkand, Wake Island, Gulf of Oman, and Sharqi Peninsula.

While the Frostbite 2 engine provides an obvious graphical update, Battlefield 3 Lead Designer Niklas Fegraeus says that the engine’s emphasis on destruction will also alter the gameplay experience for fans of Battlefield 2.

“I remember this particular building by the square in the original where players could defend very effectively,” said Fegraeus. “Now, with the destructive power of Frostbite 2, someone can just RPG that building and expose the defenders within.”

EA will presumably sell Back to Karkand as an independent expansion, but they’re yet to announce what it will cost if you don’t get it for free. The expansion will also include classic Battlefield 2 weapons, vehicles, and other assorted unlockables, so if you’re already planning to buy Battlefield 3, you should probably just pre-order it and save yourself some trouble.

You can learn more about Back to Karkand in the first part of a behind-the-scenes series at the Battlefield 3 blog. Battlefield 3 is expected sometime in the fall of 2011.
