Roblox consistently brings millions of players daily to their platform, and Sony has now revealed why the medium was removed from launching on PlayStation.
The latest tidbit of info revealed by the ongoing court case between the FTC and Microsoft surprisingly has nothing to do with either Microsoft or Activision Blizzard, and instead, it involves Sony and their reluctance to ‘unblock’ Roblox from their platform. Axios reports PlayStation Head Jim Ryan has said, “Historically, because of the large number of children that play on the PlayStation, we have been very careful with regards to opening them up to anything that could potentially exploit them,” regarding the massively popular game platform, and Sony’s relationship with it.
What’s interesting is Jim Ryan himself has also said, “Over the last couple of years, however, we have reviewed those policies and relaxed a little on this” with “We have been conservative for too long, and now we are currently engaging with people at Roblox. We hope that the situation will change” back in 2022 regarding the platform. Although we are now in 2023, the popular platform remains off the PlayStation still, and this is despite Sony’s efforts to employ a Senior Software Engineer specifically for Roblox. Sony apparently posted a job listing for that very title back in 2022, according to The Verge.
Roblox has seen numerous issues in the past regarding data breaches and server crashes that affect literally millions of users daily. A massive instance of lacking cyber security took place in July 2022, where a phishing attack led to extortion with sensitive materials from the site. Roblox themselves has reported, “More than 55% of our users are now over 13 years old and our fastest-growing demographic segment is 17-24-year-old users,” which means 45% remains under 13 years old, according to this report in May 2023.
While Roblox still maintains relevancy on every other platform, it remains to be seen as to whether it will come to the PlayStation.
