Sony Sells 50 Million PlayStation 4 Consoles Worldwide 2

The PlayStation 4 reached a brand new milestone, just in time for the end of 2016. As The Verge reports, the PlayStation 4 family has officially sold 50 million units, thanks in part to 2016’s Black Friday weekend.

The PlayStation 4 has continuously seen strong sales in the Japanese market, for that matter. Media Create’s sales chart for the week of Nov. 28 reveals that the PlayStation 4 sold 118,350 units total, beating out the 3DS after the Nintendo handheld device jumped up in sales thanks to Pokémon Sun and Moon.

When it comes to year-to-date units sold, the PlayStation 4 has moved 1,443,946, up from last year’s 1,126,714, for a total of 3,745,023 consoles sold in Japan. And while the PlayStation 4 Pro still sits comfortably around 8,000 units sold per week, the console still faces 93,696 total lifetime sales amidst its release earlier in 2016. Still, the 3DS has outsold the PlayStation 4 overall this year, with the 3DS family drawing in 1,484,206 units total over PlayStation 4’s 1,443,946 units.

It’s no secret that the PlayStation 4 sells much better than the Xbox One in Japan. Media Create reveals that the Xbox One has only sold 7,524 units in Japan, which is worse than both the PlayStation 3 and Wii U: the former boasts 57,674 year-to-date sales, whereas Wii U features 271,858. However, the console market plays out differently in the UK. GfK Chart-Track’s charts for the week of Dec. 3 reveal Xbox One and PlayStation 4 software sales are constantly competing directly with one another, with both Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and Final Fantasy XV taking up two slots on the UK’s best-selling chart for their PlayStation 4 and Xbox One releases. Meanwhile, the only console that breaks the direct competition between PlayStation 4 and Xbox One is 3DS, thanks to Pokémon Moon and Sun at ninth and tenth place, as well as Super Mario Maker at 25th. Xbox One games rarely chart in Japan, suggesting that console preferences are just as important internationally as they are domestically.

The PlayStation 4 is set to have a good year internationally, but only time will show whether the last month of the year proves the PlayStation 4’s strongest. In the meantime, check back in a couple weeks for a final year-to-date tally for the PlayStation 4’s sales.
