Round 2 For Shinkai Lovers

Suzume Is Back In North American Theatres, Aiming For Oscars 1

Crunchyroll’s Suzume is back in North American theatres for audiences who either missed the screenings or want to revisit the masterpiece.

In case you missed Makoto Shinkai’s latest film this year, Suzume has returned to over 200 North American theatres. This special run of screenings for the film began on Friday, October 27, 2023. The film will be out in both Japanese audio with English subtitles and dubbed in English.

Suzume broke through the international scene with its premiere in February 2023 at the Berlin International Film Festival. It was the first time that an anime feature film screened in the competition section in over two decades. The film grossed over $300 million worldwide during its initial theatrical run. This was the fourth highest-grossing anime film of all time.

From the auteur who brought us Your Name and Weathering With You, Suzume follows Suzume and her talking chair adventure buddy. They both are tasked to protect the world from a dark, mysterious disaster that has been plaguing different cities/towns across Japan. The plot line was inspired by Shinkai’s experiences of the 2011 earthquake that ravaged Japan. The film had a combination of hand-drawn and CGI animation. Suzume has been lauded for its high Rotten Tomatoes score, with a 96% critics score and a 98% audience score. It was also nominated for the World Soundtrack Awards “Discovery of the Year” and the Asia Pacific Screen Awards. The film was also awarded Outstanding Achievement in Music at the 46th Japan Academy Awards. The score was quite emotional when I saw the film. It even had some older Japanese tracks that were bops, around the midway point in the movie

While the Oscars are months away, Crunchyroll and Suzume look to secure a nomination position. This anime masterpiece has come out this weekend.
