Netflix has ordered a new sci-fi series from the creators of Stranger Things called The Boroughs, which will be produced through Upside Down Pictures.

Netflix continues to strike while the iron is hot and have decided to give the go ahead to a new Netflix Original, The Boroughs, from the new production company Upside Down Pictures. This new sci-fi series is Executive Produced by Stranger Things Creators The Duffer Brothers and Hilary Leavitt. Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews (developers of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance) have been tagged as showrunners for the new series, and it will take place in New Mexico.

This isn’t the first time Netflix commissioned the fledgling Upside Down Pictures for a project, as they’re already hard at work on new Stranger Things related spin-offs, including an animated series, as well as other adaptations such as another Death Note series. The Boroughs is a new eight-episode series that Netflix describes as “In a seemingly picturesque retirement community in the New Mexico desert, a group of unlikely heroes must band together to stop an otherworldly threat from stealing the one thing they don’t have… time.”

Upside Down Pictures Heads, Matt and Ross Duffer said “We’ve been fans of Jeff and Will’s writing for a long time, and when they pitched us their idea for The Boroughs, we immediately knew they had something very special on their hands,” with “While the heroes in The Boroughs have a few more years on them than the kids from Stranger Things, they are a similarly lovable bunch of misfits, and we can’t wait for you to join them on an adventure that is at turns scary, funny, and deeply touching” regarding the upcoming series, which has been slyly announced back in July 2022 on Twitter.

Addiss and Matthews echoed that sentiment with “We’re thrilled to be back at Netflix. Working alongside the Duffer Brothers (who are pretty good at making shows) and their team has been a dream come true. They bring the perfect balance of heart and horror to our story. We can’t wait for audiences around the world to unlock the dark mystery buried beneath the sunny facade of The Boroughs.”

Although The Boroughs has now been confirmed, not much else is known about the show just yet, so fans can flock to the official Netflix Twitter for more announcements as they arrive.
