Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins honoured to be part of the change for female directors, immortalised by Mattel with limited edition Barbie.
With 2017’s success of Wonder Woman, Patty Jenkins during an interview said how she believes it is an honour to be recognised for the film and that she hopes it paves the way for more women directors within the film industry.
“It is any filmmaker’s dream to have an impact on the art form that they work in – and I hope that I do with everything that I do – and I so appreciate being honoured in any way for that.”
“It’s definitely a huge deal to realise that people haven’t been honouring other kinds of directors. I think I wasn’t even thinking about it much coming up in my career, but now that I see it I’m hugely honoured to be a part of changing that conversation,” Jenkins added.
Jenkins went on to talk about how she is excited about the extended DC universe, she said, “There are a lot of great filmmakers around the DC Universe and there are a lot of great characters. My favourite thing about the DC Universe is some of these characters have been the greatest, most original superheroes for decades. I think there’s just exciting things to be done with them ahead and lots of different people that I’m excited about seeing. All of us are very different and we’re all going to do different things. So I can’t wait to see the variety, personally.”
To cement Patty Jenkin’s feat as director and success with Wonder Woman, Mattel announced for Women’s Day 2018, that the female director would get her very own Barbie doll. The Jenkin’s Barbie will be available alongside other strong role models, including renowned feminist and artist Frieda Kahlo, to more contemporary icons such as Chloe Kim, the youngest woman to win an Olympic snowboarding medal.
Lisa McKnight, Senior Vice President and General Manager for Mattel, said in a press statement, “Girls have always been able to play out different roles and careers with Barbie and we are thrilled to shine a light on real-life role models to remind them that they can be anything.” The lineup is a part of Mattel’s Shero programme that includes 14 modern-day role models and 3 historical role models, women who have broken boundaries in their fields and broken stereotypes and become an inspiration for the next generation of girls.
To build up excitement, the official Barbie Twitter account tweeted the upcoming line for International Women’s Day, which garnered an enthusiastic response.
