Beta testing is now live for the Wrath of the Lich King expansion in World of Warcraft Classic.
Interested players can head over to the official World of Warcraft site and opt-in as beta testers. Invites will be sent out in waves across development, so even if you don’t get an invitation right now, it’s possible you will in the future.
For anyone unfamiliar, World of Warcraft Classic is a version of the game that runs alongside the main version and recreates the state of the game before the release of the first expansion, The Burning Crusade. Over the years, various updates and expansions have drastically altered World of Warcraft, or added on new systems that some fans didn’t like. In 2019 Blizzard, delivered on what fans wanted, taking the game back to basics with World of Warcraft Classic.
Wrath of the Lich King is the second expansion for the MMORPG, and it was first released back in 2008. It’s generally considered one of the better expansions, but this time around Blizzard has decided to make some changes instead of keeping everything exactly the same. In a lengthy blog post Blizzard has already detailed some changes coming, and details three “pillars” Blizzard is focusing on.
These pillars are,
- Nurture and Protect Social Experiences – “The first and most important design pillar is: Nurture and Protect Social Experiences. The compelling social experiences within World of Warcraft are why many of us first fell in love with the game. To retain these experiences, we want to help players build friendships and deepen their relationships within parties, raid teams, guilds, and server communities.”
- Approachable and Familiar – “We want you to feel like you are coming home to a place you know well. Classic’s combat pacing is more deliberate. Class designs are more familiar, with fewer changes from patch to patch. Classic often tells simpler stories about a particular place and time.”
- The World is the Main Character – “We want you to maintain the feeling of being immersed in a living world (of Warcraft). We love your exploration and your player-driven stories and want to make sure you have a reason to visit various locations in the world over and over again.
Read the official blog post for more information on how these pillars are going to be implemented. World of Warcraft Classic: Wrath of the Lich King is scheduled to launch sometime in 2022.
