Wrapping Up New York Comic Con ’12

Wrapping Up New York Comic Con '12

This past weekend, New York played host to one of the biggest comic conventions in the world. Super fans united with their favourite super heros to meet some of the biggest names in comics, gaming, sci-fi, and horror. The annual four day convention was held in the Javitis Centre, located in Midtown Manhattan. If you didn’t know about the festival this past weekend, or maybe missed the abundance of news released, don’t worry. C&G has put together a small recap of the biggest news, stars, previews, and of course, games.

Dynamite Entertainment has secured some of the rights to NBC’s popular weekly horror drama, Grimm. Dynamite has decided to go ahead and launch a series of comics and graphic novels inspired by the characters and events which occur in the show. No writers or artists have been announced for the project as of yet.

  • Marvel revealed two of their most popular franchise characters, Wolverine and Iron Man, will be getting updated origin stories as part of its Season One graphic novels. Ben Acker and Ben Blacker are allegedly writing Wolverine: Season One. The two Supernatural veterans will be joined by Salva Espin on art. Taking the lead with Iron Man: Season One is Howard Chaykin, who will be joined by Gerald Parel on the art side.

  • For all you Deadpool fans, Wade Wilson is back with another unique take on the Marvel universe. This time Deadpool will be crossing over with some big literary giants and, of course, embarking on a mass murdering spree. Supposedly, familiar faces like Moby Dick and Sherlock Holmes will appear.

  • Scott Snyder made comic headlines this weekend with a variety of announcements released this weekend. Snyder will team up with DC giant Jim Lee to create an entirely new Superman comic, coming out in 2013. Snyder will also join Sean Murphy once again to work on a new comic entitled, “The Wake.” The two made their names well known after the release of the popular American Vampire series. Snyder also discussed the emerging plot line for his work on the Batman series which kicked off an incredible Joker story last week. Be sure to check out future issues for some insane depravity only the Joker can offer.

  • The much talked about Marvel Now! Series made an impact this past weekend with a panel discussion of what fans can expect to see. With launches including Iron Man, Fantastic Four, Captain America, Thor, and the Indestructible Hulk and powerful teams behind each title, anticipation for the rest of the series is booming.

  • Avenger’s fans can rest at ease now that Black Widow will take centre stage in the Marvel’s Avengers Assemble books.

  • Guardians of the Galaxy will return to comic book shops everywhere just in time to tie in with the movie. Marketing ploy? Does it really matter when this legendary series can be yours once again. Be sure to look out for it early next year.

  • The Superior Spider-Man, the newest Spider-Man franchise began its panel with a controversial start telling fans Spider-Man will not be the loveable geek Peter Parker. Arune Singh, one of the panelists, said the new Spider-Man will be edgier and darker, and not at all like the Spider-Man fans are used to. A Nolan-Esq Spider-Man perhaps?

  • Naughty Dog’s newest upcoming post apocalyptic survival game, The Last of Us, is getting its own comic. The book will act as an accompaniment prequel to the game and is being helmed by Dark Horse Comics.

  • Fans got to see some extra bonus clips to the upcoming Deadpool game being released next year. The biggest news? Domino, a mercenary in the Deadpool & Cable series, will be taking up arms alongside Wade Wilson. Deadpool hits consoles everywhere next spring.

  • If you’re at all like myself, you are super stoked for the new Devil May Cry reboot. The wait will be over sooner then expected as the demo is set to release very soon. No date has been announced, but DmC producer Alex Jones promises it’ll be sooner rather then later. Mundus will also be making an appearance in the game. The original villain from the Devil May Cry series will be sure to put some concerned fans at ease.

  • Put away the arcade fighting pads, the newest u[date to the Street Fighter X Tekken series can be played with your Vita. Announced at Comic Con, the game will not only allow for cross platform play, but will allow players to use their own Vita as the controller for the PS3 version as well.

  • Attendees were presented with a new trailer and screenshots of Capcom’s upcoming Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. The game will be released for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U on March 30, 2013.

Science Fiction/Horror/Movies

  • The popular Stephen King novel turned movie Carrie is getting a revamp. Filming in Toronto’s own backyard, and starring Julianne Moore and Chloe Grace Mortez, who’s best known for her work as Hitgirl in Kick-Ass, the movie is set in the modern era. Prepare for excessive gore and over the top sound effects.

  • Do you want to play a game? James Wan, the director behind the original Saw movie, treated fans at Comic Con with a trailer for his newest movie, The Conjuring. Based on real life ghost hunting couple, Ed and Lorraine Warren, The Conjuring will act as a prequel of sorts to the Amityville Horror. It’s set to release July 19, 2013.

  • There can only be one. Clark Gregg has been brought back from the dead through the power of Joss Whedon and will reprise his role as Agent Coulson in the upcoming TV series, S.H.I.E.L.D set to release next year.

  • The cult classic Sam Raimi franchise, Evil Dead, is being remade and Comic Con attendees were the first people to see the newest trailer. Bruce Campbell’s popular Ash will now be played by Jane Levy, most commonly known for her portrayal of Ted Mosby’s first girlfriend in How I Met Your Mother. That’s right, Ash is a woman. Groovy?

  • The new animated Star Wars series, Star Wars: Detours will offer a fresh comedic look on the Star Wars franchise. Created by Seth Green and voice acted by A-list stars including newest Oscar host Seth MacFarlane, the show is due out later this year.

  • Finally! Marvel announced the plot details for the upcoming instalment in the Avenger’s franchise, Thor 2. Thor: the Dark World takes place after the events in the Avengers with Thor trying to save the different planets in the cosmos. This time, his enemy takes the form of Malekith, a leader of an enemy race which proves to be too tough for Thor. The movie is set to release November 8, 2013.

That pretty much sums up the events of New York Comic Con 2012. The next big event will of course be PAX East in March of next year. Be sure to tune in for the latest news coming out of the convention. In the mean time, be sure to check out some reviews and features only on C&G.
