Brutalist Review Style (Version 2)

The Hammerhead Pro Hyperspeed Earbuds from developer Razer aim to offer a superior, cross-platform true wireless experience for gamers of every walk of life. The newest in the Hammerhead Earbud lineup, the Hammerhead Pro Hyperspeed take inspiration in design from those that have come before and offer a sleek, lightweight experience for gamers and audio enthusiasts alike.

Weighing in at only 6g per earbud, the Hammerhead Pro Hyperspeed shines with its high gloss, black finish. In true Razer fashion though, a small, RGB-enabled logo adorns the exterior side of each earbud making the Hammerhead Pro Hyperspeeds stand out in the crowd. These RGB lights can be managed from the Razer Audio app and allow for some fun customization. Removable silicon cushions cover the 10 mm drivers with two additional, alternatively sized pairs of cushions included in the box, allowing for the perfect fit no matter the size needed.

The Hammerhead Pro Hyperspeeds include a plastic, hard-shelled carrying case that also doubles as a charging dock for the earbuds. This is handled either via the included USB Type-C to Type-A cable or, for those that have access, any standard wireless docking station. It makes for a simple and convenient way to handle charging without the need for extra cables.

Another included accessory that helps the Hammerhead Pro Hyperspeed get its namesake comes in the form of Razer’s 2.4 GHz USB type-C dongle designed specifically for low latency audio for those that need the extra edge while gaming. The dongle also comes with a 12-inch USB type-C to type-A adaptor, allowing for easy PC plug-in without taking up precious USB type-C slots on your system. While the Hammerhead Pro Hyperspeed earbuds do support PlayStation and Nintendo Switch, they, unfortunately, will not work with Xbox due to Xbox’s proprietary wireless connection.

As with the rest of the Hammerhead earbud series, the Hammerhead Pro Hyperspeeds are sleek looking and comfortable to wear. Even over long gaming sessions of Diablo 4, the Hammerhead Pro Hyperspeeds feel fairly comfortable, which was surprising for earbuds which tend to press down on the outer edges of the ear canal after prolonged use. The silicon cushions do an impressive job of alleviating the typical pressure felt with earbuds and the overall experience, even during the aforementioned long Diablo 4 play sessions, was pleasant.

Moving on from aesthetics and overall comfort, it’s time to look at the features that the Hammerhead Pro Hyperspeeds bring to the table, and there is plenty to look at. First up is the included cross-platform true wireless experience. Out of the box, the Hammerheads support most Bluetooth-enabled smartphones, handhelds and PCs with their built-in Bluetooth 5.3. This includes the Nintendo Switch and even the Steam Deck.

Additionally, with the help of the aforementioned USB-C dongle, you can kick the audio experience up a notch with Razer’s Hyperspeed Wireless. This is Razer’s own low-latency audio experience that attempts to produce both the fastest and most stable wireless audio experience available. This is achieved by optimizing the data protocol, which translates to faster transfer speeds. That, in turn, reduces the heard audio latency present in wireless audio transfer. All of this results in a high-quality, low-latency audio experience.

With this Razer has also included a Dual-Wireless mode, allowing users to connect to two devices simultaneously, one via Bluetooth, and the other via the USB Type-C dongle. This allows for multisourcing and swapping between devices on the fly. A quick triple tap of the earbud swaps modes easily.

In real-world testing, namely hours of Diablo 4 every night since getting the Hammerheads for testing, I never noted any issues with audio latency. In fact throughout the testing both with 2.4GHz and Bluetooth 5.3 the audio experience was consistently seamless without delay. It helps add to the overall excellent audio experience present with the Hammerhead Pro Hyperspeeds.

Another contributing factor is the 10 mm drivers packed into each earbud. Coupled with 5mW of input power these earbuds can push out some exceptional audio. With a headphone-sensitive range of 95 dB SPL/mW, the Hammerheads can maintain an impressive level of audio volume.

For those new to the concept of headphone sensitivity, it is essentially the measurement of how effectively the earbuds can translate an electrical signal to an acoustical signal. In layman’s terms, it measures how well the earbud can translate a signal into something you can hear. It is the measurement of how loud the earbuds can produce audio relative to their source. The above measurement is quite respectable for such small drivers. To bring all of this to real-world application, the Hammerhead Pro Hyperspeed earbuds push out some impressive sound.

“As with the rest of the Hammerhead earbud series, the Hammerhead Pro Hyperspeeds are sleek looking and comfortable to wear.”

To test just how clean and clear the audio experience is, I ran the Pros through a series of frequency tests designed to expose any issues within the frequency range of 20 Hz to 20kHz. Suffice it to say, the Pros had no issue producing clean, clear sound over the whole frequency range. This is further helped by the fact that the Hammerheads are THX certified. THX certified simply means that they have been designed to generate consistently clean, low distortion audio signals and exceptionally focused noise isolation.

In the THX testing, the Hammerheads performed wonderfully having no issue, not only isolating frequencies but also keeping distortion low across the board. The result is an impressively clean, balanced mix across a wide range of audio samples. In fact, I was most impressed at how well the Hammerhead Pro Hyperspeeds handled both the low and high-end frequency bands simultaneously.

These earbuds can push some serious bass while still maintaining clear high-end vocal signals. The result is a pair of earbuds that can flex to fit every audio experience from movie watching to music listening to serious gaming sessions, all while maintaining a consistently clean audio mix.

There is another feature present in the Hammerhead Pro Hyperspeed earbuds that helps contribute to this impressive audio experience. It comes in the form of adjustable ANC or Active Noise Cancellation. ANC is managed from the Razer Audio app (available on both Android and iOS) as well as through onboard controls built into the earbuds.

“Razer really has mastered ANC control with the Hammerhead Pro Hyperspeeds.”

Through a series of taps, you can control the ANC sensitivity along with a host of other features (more on this later). Razer really has mastered ANC control with the Hammerhead Pro Hyperspeeds. Using the earbud’s built-in mic, the system does an excellent job of filtering out unwanted noise while still maintaining that clean audio mix. It works incredibly well and does help maintain an uninterrupted audio experience.

The included app, Razer Audio, also offers a nice quality-of-life layer to the whole Hammerhead Pro experience. With a host of features, the app allows you to take full control of the audio experience. EQ mixing, Chroma and ANC controls can all be handled from within the app. Additionally, Game mode and quick connection between Bluetooth devices can all be accessed easily. The Razer Audio app also allows you to take control of some of the tap functions available on the earbuds themselves. Volume, song skipping, and ANC can all be assigned to tap sequences, allowing you to further customize the experience.

On the note of tap controls, this is the one area that does come up wanting on the Hammerhead Pro Hyperspeed earbuds. While some tap sequences consistently worked without issue, I found more than once that the earbuds struggled with some of the sequences and didn’t always register on the first attempt. Overall it worked fairly well, but I did run into this issue more than once.

One unique feature that ended up being a highlight of the Hammerhead is the auto pause on removal. When you take one or both earbuds out they send a signal that automatically pauses whatever audio is playing at that moment on your device. This ended up being an incredibly useful feature that once again added a nice layer of quality of life to the Hammerheads.

“While a few small issues hold the Hammerhead Pro Hyperspeed Earbuds from being absolutely perfect, they are nonetheless some of the nicest sounding and functional earbuds I’ve worked with.”

The Hammerhead Pro Hyperspeeds also come with a built-in microphone for in-game chat and calls. While it functionally works, it doesn’t produce amazing audio. However, it is clear enough and people will have no problem hearing you while on a call or in chat.

The final area tested was battery life. With full ANC and lighting active, I averaged about 3 to 3 and half hours before needing to charge the earbuds. When ANC and lighting were off, that jumped up to over 6 hours of use. With the case’s built-in battery which can also charge the earbuds when no power source is available, you can expect to get around 20 to 24 hours out of time before needing to find a wall plug. Considering how small and lightweight the Hammerheads actually are, those are some fairly impressive numbers.

Razer Hammerhead Pro Hyperspeed Earbud Review

The Hammerhead Pro Hyperspeed Earbuds are an impressive set of earbuds. They produce exceptional audio quality, offer some nice quality-of-life features and have no problem adapting to most gaming situations. Some odd with the tap controls and a lack lustre mic do create some minor issues with the Hammerhead Pro Hyperspeeds, but this is more than made up for with their excellent audio and great feature sets.

While a few small issues hold the Hammerhead Pro Hyperspeed Earbuds from being absolutely perfect, they are nonetheless some of the nicest sounding and functional earbuds I’ve worked with.  If you are in the market for a solid pair of gaming earbuds that can also handle all your audio needs, then the Hammerhead Pro Hyperspeed Earbuds are worth considering.
