When it comes to Sennheiser, it’s probably not the brand all potential buyers in the premium earbud market are putting too much attention toward in a world where the big dogs like Apple, Sony, and Samsung have inserted themselves into. Each generation of Sennheiser’s premium flagship, MOMENTUM True Wireless has constantly improved on the previous since its introduction in 2018 and the third generation – the MOMENTUM True Wireless 3 earbuds truly offer a masterclass set of wireless headphones.
There are a lot of Bluetooth wireless earbuds on the market today, so it’s hard to find what’s right for you. That was how I thought until I tried the Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 3 earbuds, and I was pleasantly surprised by them in many ways, mostly positive. Getting into the negative first, my main qualm with the Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 3 earbuds is a personal issue with earbuds overall: in 10-to-20-minute bursts my ears get irritated after I put any earbuds in for too long. I can’t truly enjoy these MOMENTUM earbuds as much as I want to.
When the Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 3 earbuds are actually in my ears they deliver the best sound quality I’ve heard come out of any earbud. The sound that comes out of these things is clear, giving a much truer feeling audio more inline with what the artist envisioned. The Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 3 earbuds even managed to sound even better than my own MacBook Pro speakers.
Sennheiser’s approach to its MOMENTUM True Wireless 3 earbuds focuses more on its overall sound quality. If that were not enough, the earbuds also come complete with an adaptive noise cancellation mode out of the box. Speaking of which, similarly to other earbuds, the device connects through Bluetooth, but the tech in the device specifically uses Bluetooth 5.2, which makes the connection process that much quicker.
While in your ears, you can press and hold down the device’s touch controls so the MOMENTUM True Wireless 3 earbuds can easily connect to your preferred device in the Bluetooth settings. One thing I like about the Sennheiser earbuds that I find not many brands allow, is that you don’t need to have both earbuds connected to listen to your favourite media. You can just pop one earbud and go about your day.
I’ve tested the MOMENTUM True Wireless earbuds on smart devices, my previously mentioned MacBook Pro and an Android handheld. The connection process was much less a hassle than the other Bluetooth earbuds I owned. Getting into music streaming apps like Spotify, my experience was seamless and enjoyable, giving more time for listening to music, and less time frustratingly dealing with settings.
That’s not to say there aren’t any problems with the MOMENTUM True Wireless. When testing out hip-hop and rap, the sound did not feel as balanced as it could for the genre, giving a sub-par experience. So while Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 3 earbuds do deliver fantastic audio, it is worth noting this slight downside to the audio profile.
The Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 3 earbuds aren’t the type of earbuds anyone seeks out if they’re on a budget, as they do sit on a higher tier in both price and overall quality, although it is in this critics’ opinion, they are worth that investment. The third version of MOMENTUM True Wireless earbuds will cost you a little less money this time around compared to the full retail price of the previous model, the Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 2 – the newest model is $70 (CAD) cheaper comparatively.
Don’t take that as a sign that Sennheiser MOMENTUM’s third-gen earbuds are a lesser model. Sennheiser takes what worked with the Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 2, and revises any of the previous generation’s shortcomings. This leads to the creation of one of the best Bluetooth earbuds on the market today.
The third generation MOMENTUM True Wireless earbuds out of the box come in a stylish charging case that has an almost material-like texture to it on the outside. Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 3’s charging case offers more of a stronger grip than other smoother or plastic-feeling charging cases, so the chance of it slipping out of your hands is low. As for the size of the case, it’s kind of a big case on the long side that goes as far as an index finger with a depth almost as long as my fingertip, which might be a no-go for anyone wanting a smaller case experience.
Like most earbuds on the market, the Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 3 earbuds come in a variety of earbud sizes that range from extra small to large, so pick out the one that speaks to you. The earbuds are also designed with wing tips in mind, which is a customizable rubber tip that when the earbud is turned, hooks to the inside ridge of your ear’s anthelix. That all basically means it makes it harder for the MOMENTUM True Wireless 3 to fall out when you’re out and about. Even while shaking my head hard, they did not fall out once. As with the tips, the MOMENTUM True Wireless 3 earbuds wingtips come in different sizes like the earbuds ranging from small to large.
Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 3 earbuds‘ black-grey case opens up like a jewellery gift box — a simple yet elegant presentation. The case itself features a USB-C charging port on the front and offers 28 hours of power in addition to the earbuds’ seven hours of battery life. If you’re in a hurry, you can get one hour of music playtime after charging the earbuds for 10 minutes, while a full charge is one and a half hours, which can be wirelessly charged. Personally, throughout my review process, I never ran out of juice while using the full number of hours potential buyers will have with these earbuds. Other features include water resistance and a pretty good-sounding microphone for calls.

While on their own through Bluetooth is great, the Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 3 earbuds go to the next level when you add the company’s app that when connected can help you configure your experience through it. One notable advantage the app allows is to change the connection. While you can’t connect to multiple devices, the app allows app users to sync multiple connections, making the process of using the MOMENTUM True Wireless 3 even easier. When you feel like you want to connect the Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 3 earbuds to a different device, you can turn on your preferred device through the app to easily switch between them.
It’s not the multi-device connected feature users are looking for in the Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 3 earbuds, but it’s a half-answer problem. The app also allows you to boost the sound of the earbuds using an equalizer, which has two sound modes—Bass Boost and Podcast.
The app also lets you sound check, so you can find the best-customized equalizer preset settings that work for you. One last app feature I mentioned before is touch controls. Well, through the app you can customize the MOMENTUM True Wireless 3 earbuds’ gesture control settings for one-touch, two-touch, three-touch, and press/hold control for each earbud, which is eight overall touch settings you can customize.
Some of the customizations I use include play/pause, audio volume increase/decrease, next/previous track, noise cancellation, voice assistant, and much more. The app option gives users ample freedom to make the touch controls their very own. Also, if that were not enough, the app setting is also a great reminder of what each function does if you need a refresher, as there were times when I honestly forgot what some of my least used touch control gestures do.
The Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 3 are one of my favourite sets of Bluetooth earbuds in a long while. The sound on the MOMENTUM True Wireless 3 is a masterclass in what earbuds should sound like. While on the premium side, if you’re looking for earbuds that push the limits of sound and customization, then you would be doing yourself a disservice by not putting the Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 3 Earbuds on your radar.
