One of the biggest announcements from the VGAs, Pyschonauts 2 has earned over a million dollars in a day through its crowdfunding campaign.

Going through the crowdfunding site Fig, Double Fine is looking to create a sequel to the much acclaimed, sort-of cult classic Psychonauts, the quirky puzzle platformer in which you played a young psychic named Raz attending a summer camp where people go into each other’s minds.

The details of the campaign state that while Double Fine and an external partner are putting up the bulk of the money, the project needs 3.3 million in crowdfunding resources. In less than a day after it was announced, the project has received over a million dollars from its 7943 backers, two of which pledged $10,000.

Some of the rewards are pretty cool ranging from digital copies of Psychonauts 1 and 2, the soundtracks to each, a collectable Raz figure or plushie, T-shirts, and signed art prints and collectors boxes.

While it’s good to see fans getting excited and supporting a project like Psychonauts, I can’t help but feel like this is another Shenmue 3 situation. It seems odd that Double Fine, the team who single handedly made the first Pyschonauts, who claim to be fronting the lion’s share of the money, needs the community to prove their loyalty and provide 3.3 million to make this happen.

Perhaps this amount is to prevent another Broken Age controversy, it just seems strange that companies are taking well-known properties and asking we pay for it up-front to prove we really want it.
