IGDA Calls out Nintendo for Alison Rapp Controversy

IDGA Calls out Nintendo for Alison Rapp Controversy 2

International Game Developers Association (IGDA) executive director Kate Edwards made a strong statement against Nintendo’s recent actions regarding Alison Rapp.

In case the Wi-Fi in your cave has been sketchy and you hadn’t heard, there’s been major controversy concerning on particular Nintendo employee, Alison Rapp. Basically, Rapp was a spokesperson and marketing officer for Nintendo, but was fired due to a “conflicting second job”. This sparked a ton of confusion and hate towards Nintendo, all of which can be found in our original article.

Since then, the controversy moved IGDA executive director Kate Edwards to call Nintendo out on their actions.

IDGA Calls out Nintendo for Alison Rapp Controversy 1

“While Nintendo’s official statement on the matter of Alison Rapp’s firing strives to distance the company from anything related to the orchestrated online campaign of harassment and defamation that was raging against her, their timing in dealing with the issue is dubious at best,” Edwards said. “Unfortunately, the company seems oblivious to the consequences of their actions, not realizing the perceived victory it handed to the online hate groups who are now pursuing the dismissal of other women game developers by derision and defamation to their companies. By now, we would expect that all game development and publishing companies would be fully aware of negative social media dynamics and be more discerning of online feedback, as well as more protective of their employees — especially their employees of diverse backgrounds. Many have become proactive and aware but this industry obviously needs to make more progress.”

IGDA represents 8,000 developers worldwide, and Edwards’ stance on the situation could be a powerful driver for change in the industry.

Its nothing to do with her second job they're fighting for... "Dismissal of other women" seriously? Always making a situation like this! Gender wars are we 5 again?

    • ZalanDarkbane

2nd job was as a prostitute.

  • Luis Fernando de Leon

Its called the IGDA not IDGA. Its stands for International Game Developers Association

    • cgmagonline

Good catch! That has been fixed!

    • torchie4269

      IGDA? More like IDGAF.

  • Bubba Gump

Pity you didn't do even basic research on this case.

Yeah, her own twitter (the same one she used for marketing for Nintendo) advertising a racy photo shoot WHILE HOLDING NINTENDO PRODUCTS is TOTALLY "an anonymous, acceptable moonlighting job".

  • Nameynamerson

Isn't this the prostitute who supports for pedophilia?

  • Daniel Williams

Uh, she was working as a prostitute.

    • Mishyana

Uh, no sane person gives a shit.

      • ZalanDarkbane

The head of PR for a company that sells products to children is a prostitute and nobody cares?

Working in the sex worker industry is fine and is acceptable. But many communities have laws against it, and lots of people find it very morally and ethically questionable.

        • Mishyana

It shouldn't be relevant unless she was advertising her wares through Nintendo or to those children. She was doing neither. We are long since past the point of where sex work needed to stop being criminalized, and we don't change that by continuing to have fainting spells over or justifying actions like this because of it.

If there really was something in her contract about not having a second job, then make that argument. Let's not have a collective case of the vapors because it turns out she exchanges sex for money and we've suddenly decided to go all Puritan again.

          • uncle_angle6

            The progressive left everyone!

It doesn't matter that your kids are being marketed to by a prostitute any more! No big deal if she defends pedophilia. Not a big deal that she has sex for money. Only her progressive values matter!

          • Mishyana

Need some smelling salts there, Grandpa? Your hypocritical moralism is showing. Also, she didn't "defend pedophilia". Try actually reading the paper she wrote instead of regurgitating every stupid self-reinforcing thing you absorb like a sponge.

          • Daniel Williams
          • Anon

            You're a freak, you're a disgusting piece of trash.

          • tuskx

She was a criminal representing the company and their products. Nothing more, nothing less.

          • Venus Adept

            Damn, man. You're stupid.

          • Mishyana

I'm going to need some water after that burn. Just don't call me a poo-poo head, your mom might ground you for using naughty language.

          • J_Joestar

Maybe not directly, but her job was PR (meaning that she acted as a public face for the company) yet she was posting images of herself in see-through lingerie on the same public twitter account that identifies her as a Nintendo PR spokesperson.
When your basic Job description is to maintain and improve a family friendly gaming company's image, there are just some things you don't do.

          • ZalanDarkbane

She used the same twitter account that she used for company purposes to advertise her sexy photos, wearing the outfits of Nintendo characters. She also used this twitter account to get into fights online and post her dissatisfaction about a pedophile being arrested for having child porn on their computer.

Your argument about the 'vapors' would hold a lot more weight, if the people defending her now after the dirt has come out didn't attack Microsoft recently for daring to hire go go dancers for an event they had.

Large companies, where you are one of the faces of the company have morals clauses in their contracts. This is why Aflac insurance dumped Gilbert Gottfried after he went on a rant about the loss of life in Japan after the earthquake and tsunami.

This is why you don't have people like Bill Cosby, Ron Jeremy and Hulk Hogan being the public face for a children's toy company, or if they did, the backlash would be huge.

She is free to do what she wants with her body, as long as it isn't breaking the law (which it was) and she understands that some people will have a major problem with it, one of them her employer who sells toys and games to children.

Nintendo quietly and without making a huge stink about it was as much to protect them from lawsuits both from her and their investors if it came out that a prostitute was working at a high profile position in their company as a PR person.

That she chose to go on attack towards Nintendo and make herself even a bigger target for investigation, go after the people she got into an argument with even more, and get the really shoddy games media companies all to push the narrative about Gamergate making her lose her job.

From there it was just down to someone bored enough to do some internet searching, whether it as checking the advertisements for prostitutes in her area or searching the internet somehow for the EXIF data included in the photos to find other images taken with the exact same lens/camera, I don't know, the technology part of it is beyond my knowledge.

And what they found was someone with the same build, same tattoos, same wedding ring, same nose ring that was operating as a $250 an hour prostitute that took their photos using the exact same camera and exact same lens (verified by serial numbers)

          • Mishyana

I haven't seen proof that she was advertising her other services using the Nintendo Twitter handle she had, just people talking about it. If that's the case, then yes, that would be a case for her termination.

As to the remainder, whether she was a sex worker or no still does not excuse the sex shaming, calling her a whore, etc., particularly not coming largely from a group of Internet man-children for whom the main fight seems to be the 'right' for women in video games to be little more than boobs with a face attached, because anything else = censorship. Occasionally underage ones, at that. On the Microsoft thing, I can't really speak to that except to maybe say don't hire a load of solely female dancers for an event that literally follows a 'Women in Gaming' conference..? That's not sex shaming, it's a bunch of dudes saying "Here's where you belong in gaming". The women who were at the conference did not feel welcome.

Look, if you can show me that she's actually a pedo / pedo supporter with something other than a badly phrased college paper arguing poorly that pedo fiction keeps actual real world pedophilia rates down and one out of context tweet, then I'll be right beside you with the torches. Until then, it sounds like petulant after-excuses for people who were hating on and threatening her before this shit even came out.

          • Smazeli

Hello, here's a collection of tweets of her defending pedophilia and actual child porn hoarders, along with cross-promoting her softcore photos. Most of them are still up on her public twitter, so you can verify for yourself:

"That's not sex shaming, it's a bunch of dudes saying "Here's where you belong in gaming".

Serious question though, is that what really goes through your mind when you see a stripper? "Yep, that's all women are good for!"

        • Terra Jones

No one would have known if an online mob of misogynistic jerks didn't violate her privacy and make a big deal over it. This is sexual harassment.

      • Daniel Williams
        • Mishyana

It's also illegal to kill a dog using a decompression chamber. If you're suggesting that the law is always in line with morality and especially sanity, then I'm not sure what to tell you.

      • Anon

        You are filth.

        • Mishyana

Oh no, not the judgement of some anonymous rando shitbird on the internet, whatever shall I do with the rest of my life.

          • Anon

You are being bullycided as I type this.

  • Venus Adept

Maybe she shouldn't have been a fucking hooker in her spare time. How dare Nintendo fire a hooker!

  • Andrew

Right, because it totally wasn't right of Nintendo to fire someone who is a prostitute and tarnished the name of the company by defending peodphila. But she also lied about it to the media and attacked Nintendo for not defending her from the mythical "hordes of GamerGate".. knowing that Nintendo could not adequately defend themselves and that she was wrongly accusing her critics.

Kate Edwards, you are a fucking nitwit.
