Developed by Nintendo, Splatoon 2 is a follow-up to the 2015 third person shooter, Splatoon. Splatoon 2 retains the same core gameplay, with a variety of new weapons and features. Players create their own Inkling, creatures with the ability to shape-shift between humanoid and squid forms. Splatoon 2 focus mainly on its multiplayer modes, splitting players into teams with the goal of painting the battlefield with their team’s assigned colour. As with the first game, Splatoon 2 also offers a single-player campaign that doubles as a tutorial for the game’s many mechanics.

Nintendo held a Splatoon 2 focused Nintendo Direct last week, highlighting a number of the game’s new features. Among these, Nintendo spoke briefly on the game’s online features. Alongside the release of Splatoon 2, Nintendo will be releasing the Nintendo Switch online app for mobile devices. The app will allow players to check their in-game stats and gear, and spend in-game currency on new items in the shop. The Nintendo Switch Online app will also let players arrange game matches with friends and voice chat with members of their team when a match begins.

HORI’s Splatoon 2 “Splat & Chat” headset will be available July 21 for $29.99.
